Develop a coordinated, goal-driven internationalization approach with the area center directors, international administrative unit directors and provost fellows, taking into account the scope, activities and resources of the centers, administrative units, as well as provost fellow priority initiatives.
Connect the work of the centers and provost’s fellows to university-wide internationalization activities through KU’s strategic planning platform and university alignment initiatives.
Participate as an active member of the International Affairs leadership group.
Remain engaged in related Kansas, national and international discussions pertaining to the role of higher education in today’s international and global context.
Support the coordination and execution of multicenter programming and events in consultation with the area center directors and other campus stakeholders.
Facilitate the expansion of connections with regional educational entities (K-12 schools, minority-serving institutions, community colleges, etc.) toward the alignment of institutional strengths and resources in KU’s international outreach and programming (strengthening service to local and global communities).
Partner with other members of KUIA leadership in the leveraging of administrative resources of all the units comprising international affairs toward the simplification of operations and the creation of new synergistic efficiencies.
Identify funding opportunities and facilitate the integration of center-affiliated faculty international expertise across KU’s internationalized activities (faculty research, business and government activities, internationalizing teaching, community outreach, international partner development).
Convene people and groups working on/in areas and projects that would benefit from area center involvement, as well as the involvement of KUIA’s administrative personnel.
Serve on committees as a faculty member representing international affairs.
Supervision – 10%
Complete annual evaluations for each of the area center directors as the direct report for their administrative appointment (the faculty components of their appointment are evaluated in their department of tenure). The AVP IGE will request the departmental faculty evaluation for each director annually and integrate into the full annual evaluation posted in the Human Resources system each year.
Work in concert with directors’ deans and academic departments on matters related to initial hiring and retention with regard to the area center administrative appointments. Director base salary is set by the Dean over the faculty member’s department of tenure.
Manage center-related annual budgetary processes (requests, advocacy, and resource alignment and acquisition) toward the intentional utilization of fiscal resources toward shared goals and on the basis of strong performance outcomes.
Data and Reporting – 10%
Develop clear metrics to measure, assess, and report on outcomes and impact associated with the area centers unique contributions to KU’s overall internationalization efforts.
Collect data and prepare reports that demonstrate the overall impact of our internationalization efforts as a university and ensure those metrics are fully incorporated into the larger planning, goal-setting and reporting of KUIA vis-à-vis the Provost’s leadership team.
Manage the data gathering and reporting essential to external sponsors that are funding our efforts and toward competitive bids on future proposals.
Enhance the visibility of KU’s internationalization efforts and successes through outreach and strategic communication and advocate for the activities of the centers and fellows.

Position Overview:This position is open only for current tenured faculty at the University of Kansas.As a member of the leadership team of International Affairs and reporting directly to the Senior Internationalization Officer, the Associate Vice Provost for International and Global Engagement (AVP IGE) is a critical partner in connecting KU’s deep international and global expertise and capacities (academic and administrative) with community needs. Areas of community include students, faculty, alumni, the Kansas and national workforce, industry, the higher education community, social service sector, local and state government, federal government, international partner institutions, foreign governments and foundations, NGOs, and multinational organizations.KU has five area centers reporting into the AVP IGE, each with a 0.5 FTE faculty director with regional and disciplinary expertise: the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies; the Kansas African Studies Center; the Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies; the Center for East Asian Studies; and the Center for Global and International Studies. All but the Center for Global and International Studies receive funding from the U.S. Department of Education through its Title VI National Resource Center and Foreign Language and Area Studies grants.The AVP IGE position is expected to perform duties throughout the calendar year. Appointments are generally based on an academic year (9-month), with an administrative supplement and summer salary commitment. The remaining 0.5 FTE of the position serves as a tenured faculty member within the assigned unit. The initial appointment for the AVP IGE is for a four-year period, which may be renewed based upon mutual agreement, performance, and the satisfactory conclusion of a comprehensive review of IGE-related activities conducted in the third year of the four-year cycle.
