Works with patients providing specialized behavioral supports in inpatient and emergency settings. Refers patients awaiting psychiatric placement and patients medically admitted to an inpatient floor with potential behavior support needs. Offering consultation in the Ambulatory setting may be done on an as needed basis.

Develops a behavior support plans for patients in a hospital setting focused on antecedent management/management of known triggers, and ways to support/increase functional communication for the patient. May perform Functional Behavioral Analysis (FBA). Assesses patients using the following methods:

Interviews staff, family members, school, and community based providers who know the patients well to gather background and preliminary information to assist in developing a behavior support plans.

Directly observes patients and analyzes any available data to help determine the function of the problem behavior.

Defines all target behaviors in objective and measurable terms and designs appropriate data collection systems to measure the target behaviors.

Collaborates with care team to develop and structure patients’ daily routines and activities to ensure patients are as active as possible during admission. Develops behavior support plans that can be implemented within the context of a medical setting.

Liaises closely with patient, family, Child Life Specialists, Nurses, Social Workers, Psychiatric and Security staff to ensure maximum support and communication. Provides basic training to hospital staff on individualized behavior plans. Attends huddles and utilizes other methods to educate medical team on patients’ support needs and on how to adhere to the behavior plan.

Attends applicable team meetings (e.g., morning rounds, family meetings, interdisciplinary ongoing care and disposition meetings, ethics committee).

Trains staff and/or family members directly (i.e., in person, with opportunities for questions, discussion, etc.) on the implementation of behavior support plans.

Conducts in-service training, workshops, and presentations to develop skills and establish consistent practices.

Provides staff development, training, and modeling for team members in strategies and methodologies for working with patients with neurodevelopmental disabilities, autism, and behavior challenges on an ongoing basis through small group training opportunities and discussion.

Ensures all policies and guidelines required by the BCBA ethical code and University guidelines (for fieldwork hours) are followed.

To qualify, you must have:

A Master’s degree in Behavior Analysis, Education, Psychology or a closely related field as determined by the Behavioral Analyst Certification Board plus a minimum of two (2) years’ experience serving individuals with lifelong disabilities including at least one (1) year experience completing comprehensive functional assessments and behavior support plans.

Experience as a Behavioral Analyst in an inpatient setting is preferred.

Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification is required.
