This team member will be a key participant in the preparation and review of the annual financial statements of the stand-alone defined benefit pension plans and defined contribution plans sponsored by GM and certain U.S. and Canadian affiliates, and play a vital role in the annual audit and regulatory filing processes. This position requires considerable interaction with various internal departments such as Employee Benefits, Legal, Tax and Investment Management as well as with external auditors and other third-party benefit plan service providers (e.g., trustees, record keepers, actuaries). Also, the team member will partake in the assembling of global pension investments data for inclusion in the GM annual Form 10-K report. This role requires a high level of independent judgment, decision-making, accuracy, creativity, and initiative. Below represents some sample responsibilities related to the work involved:Responsibilities IncludePrepare audited benefit plan financial statements, including all footnote disclosures, to support annual regulatory filings required by D.O.L., I.R.S. and certain Canadian governmental authoritiesPrepare the annual Form 5500 and other applicable reports filed with the D.O.L / I.R.S for all GM sponsored benefit plans subject to E.R.I.S.A. reporting requirementsFacilitate annual audit activities, which encompasses preparing workpaper analyses, examining data submissions from internal and external parties and coordinating deliverables to the external auditorsReview and compile domestic and international pension investment information for the required fair value disclosures in the annual SEC Form 10-K filing and Canadian statutory financial statementsPerform research on complex accounting and financial reporting matters attributable to the plans and companyReview/prepare monthly benefits related journal entries and account reconciliationsProvide and maintain supporting documentation for accounting work and ongoing internal controls testing Maintaining support documentation/files for area of responsibilityMaintain understanding of and ability to apply accounting standardsParticipate in special projectsQualificationsBasic RequiredBachelor’s degree or Master’s degree with major in accountingCPA or CA - active license holderA minimum of 5 years of combined industry and public accounting experience in benefits or plan accountingStrong technical accounting backgroundStrong interpersonal skills and demonstrated commitment to teamwork and partnershipsStrong oral and written communication skillsStrong understanding of internal controlsAbility to prioritize assignments/projects and multi-task within established time constraintsHighly proficient personal computer skills and technology drivenDemonstrated problem solving and analytical abilitiesAbility to assimilate information quickly in a consistent and accurate mannerProactive work style and desire to take on additional responsibilitiesAptitude to resolve issues and embrace and manage changeBasic PreferredExperience with employee benefit plan accounting and reporting; thorough knowledge of ASC 820, 960, 962 and D.O.L reporting regulationsFamiliarity with Canadian benefit plan regulatory filing requirements and International Financial Reporting Standards a plus
