Job SummaryThe OB/GYN Laborist Role A is an in-house position which ensures that safe, high quality, evidence-based care is provided to obstetric patients and that hospital resources are managed in a clinically appropriate way. In sites where residents and/or medical students are present this may include resident supervision and education. The OB/GYN Laborist Role A is the primary, first line provider who is expected to be immediately available and present during the entirety of their shift.ASSIGNMENT: 24 Hour In-House Call Coverage ProgramLOCATION: High volume labor and delivery units (>3,000 deliveries per year)Essential Functions

Prevention of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality by ensuring that all inpatient obstetric care meets and/or exceeds current standards of care.

The prevention of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality should result from role A’s identification and remediation of any area of clinical concern via collaboration with the members of the obstetric care team which may includea. Medical studentsb. nursing staffc. resident ob/gyn and/or family medicine physiciansd. maternal fetal medicine fellowse. advanced practice providers including certified nurse midwives, physician assistants, and nurse practitionersf. private and/or faculty attending ob/gyn and/or family medicine physicians

Through collaboration with the charge nurse, ensure that unit resources are managed in a clinically appropriate need-based way which may includea. Prioritization of pending labor inductionsb. Prioritization of pending cesarean deliveries

Provide on-site, restricted obstetric care for patients whoa. have had no prenatal careb. if applicable, have had prenatal care with the staff servicec. have had prenatal care with a provider who does not have privileges at the facilityd. have had prenatal care with a provider who is unable to be present becausei. the provider is taking call from home and there is emergent clinical situation which cannot safely wait for the provider to arriveii. the provider has a personal emergencyiii. the provider is managing another clinical emergency

Facilitation of transfers from outside hospitals which may includea. Accepting of all medically appropriate transfersb. Informing all relevant members of the obstetric/neonatal team of pending arrival of transferc. Management of transfer upon arrival

Lead scheduled Safety Huddles and post-event debriefing sessions

Provide clinical assistance to other ob/gyn attendings, advanced practice providers, and if applicable, resident physicians which may include but is not limited toa. Second opinions for fetal heart rate interpretationsb. Assistance in managing obstetric emergencies such as shoulder dystocia and postpartum hemorrhagec. Surgical assistance with complicated or routine cesarean delivery and obstetrical laceration repaird. Multifetal deliveries

In facilities which have resident physicians, supervise and support the resident physicians’ management of obstetrics patients which may includea. Triage evaluation and managementb. Antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum management

Qualifications

Required Doctorate Graduate of approved Medical College

LIC-Physician (MD) - STATEMI State of Michigan Upon Hire required Or

LIC-Osteopathic Physician (DO) - STATEMI State of Michigan Upon Hire required

CRT-DEA Registration - STATEMI State of Michigan Upon Hire required
