Maintains roadways for snow and ice control: removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols.
Prepares and inspects winter equipment – maintains snowplow equipment, cutting edges and sanders; and cleans equipment post storm.
Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup including machine or hand sweeping of bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps, and roadways.
Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals. Includes all setup work associated with liquid anti-icing and de-icing chemicals, hauling, mixing, measuring, and reporting.
Performs all work related to installing, repairing, maintaining, and removing snow fences; replacing mailboxes.
Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
Performs traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications
A valid commercial driver’s license (class A or B), with a tanker endorsement, and no air brake restriction.
One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).
Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
The incumbent is required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called.
Physical RequirementsThe physical demands of this job will vary, but typically requires lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects such as 50-pound bags. This job also may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. This job will require strenuous manual labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing.Weather elements: May require frequent exposure to weather elements (cold and hot) on a daily basis.Additional RequirementsSuccessful candidate must pass past-employer reference checks and criminal history checkIt is our policy that all candidates submit to a background investigation prior to employment.
