Walkabout Outdoor’s Garden Crew Members bridge horticultural knowledge & environmental
awareness with landscape and garden field experience to create artistic landscapes and
gardens that support local ecology.
Required Skills:
● Identify plants, their condition, needed care and other site conditions including soil types,
microclimates, slopes, and landscape features.
● Has experience grading soil, installing perennials, trees, shrubs, soil amendments,
seeding, mulching and applying common garden maintenance practices.
● Maintain independent and team workflow according to a multi-day construction plan.
● Reports progress and identifies and reports on changes appropriately.
● Helps coordinate project equipment, tools, materials and daily tasks to various skill
levels including training other staff when appropriate.
● Ensures that quality expectations are met or exceeded.
● Organizational and maintenance upkeep of Walkabout’s shop and office including
grounds, materials, tools and equipment.
● Can read and understand landscape design plans. Listens and follows instructions, but
also discerns when to adapt plans.
● Actively pursues a deepening knowledge of ecology, environment and horticulture.
Believes gardening can have an impact and engages teammates in topical conversation.
Preferred Skills:
● Knowledge and experience installing drainage features, performing landscape
demolition, sod removal, soil care for seeding prep, invasive species removal.
● Experience equipment operation including deliveries with truck & trailer, operation of sod
cutter, rototiller, Dingo, and all landscape power tools.
● Can operate an irrigation and landscape lighting system, identify components, schedule
programs, troubleshoot and repair.
● Creative and knowledgeable annual flower and containers installation.
Professional Requirements:
● 1 year professional experience or educational equivalent
● Available to work 40 hrs a week seasonally April-November. Is available for occasional
overtime hours during the growing season and is available for on-call work during the
winter months.
● Valid driver's license with good driving record
● Smartphone available for communicating via Slack, Monday and Google.
