Looking for motivated mechanic / technician for Restomod / Hot Rod shop

Our custom car shop is in need of more help! One of our technicians is retiring from technician work, and we need to replace them. We specialize in engine and chassis swap RestoMods, but do a range of mechanical repair, rebuilding, and re-engineering on a huge variety of classic vehicles. We’re looking for a technician / builder to do repair, trouble-shooting, and fabrication work. We have a relaxed atmosphere and work on a lot of cool vehicles with a very flexible work day.

The shop is in Brooklyn Center near downtown Robbinsdale. We currently need to fill one of our four technician spots. We are booked out with projects for many months and need to try to get caught up on projects.

We build RestoMod style engine / chassis swaps, putting modern engines, suspension and brakes into older chassis to allow these older cars to be used as daily drivers or cruisers rather than trailer queens or unstreetable drag or show cars. We don’t shy away from projects with big engines, but we also build projects with tiny, efficient engines or even electric drive-trains. We build affordable cars at our core, but don’t turn down the opportunity to build high dollar customs either. Ultimately, we listen to our customers to build what they want while guiding them to the build that fits their needs.

In addition to full RestoMods, we install EFI kits, electric power steering, car connectivity setups, etc. The emphasis is on keeping interesting vintage and classic cars on the street with modern amenities and reliability. Most of the work we do is mechanical and electrical. We partner with painters and upholsterers to finish builds when needed.

This role has a lot of flexibility. This is intended to be a 9-5 job, but if you need a flexible work schedule, we can support that. The primary work needs to be during normal business hours, but there is lots of flexibility. We do a huge variety of work so it’s not the same old thing day after day. I also provide lunch every day.

We’re a small shop, and so there is opportunity and need to do a variety of jobs here. You might be welding one day, installing tires or suspension parts the next, and installing EFI on a classic the next day. You might even post photos to social media if you’re so inclined, or make videos or blog posts about what we’re doing. We’re also engineering kits that we have or offer for sale.

Pay is $20 - 30 / hour depending on experience. Overtime is available as projects warrant, but never required. We currently do not offer health insurance, and I know that’s a deal breaker for some.

I am an engineer with two decades of engineering experience and three decades of playing with and building cars, and I have combined these experiences, building cars from an engineering perspective: Planning, quality, and process is the key to our success.

Required skills

Self driven - once a task or project is identified, you will understand expectations and work on your own or with others to complete the work with minimal direction.

High work and personal ethics - We are an ethical company working to provide employees and customers high value and work to exceed expectations wherever possible. This may drive rework or extra work to get things right.

Quality work - Do it right the first time and build it like it's your car. Perfection is not our goal, but reliable function is.

Hard working - Really, I want people who can work smarter more than work harder, but the goal is to get things done quickly and save plenty of time for life outside of work.

Able to think or work outside of the box - We will try new things and do things in new ways to be innovative in our product and services. You might not have outside of the box ideas, but you need to be able to embrace these ideas as we or a customer requests them.

Experience working on cars and engines. This might be as a professional technician, or might be work done in your garage.
