Basic FunctionThe current vacancy is in the Emergency Communications Department. The eligibility list created by this vacancy may be used to hire other vacancies in the department.Perform skilled emergency communication dispatch work specializing in law or fire; prioritize requests for 9-1-1 emergency assistance by transmitting information by radio, telephone and computer terminal; exercise independent judgment to determine the type and level of response necessary when dispatching law agencies, fire departments, public works, utilities or other support assistance; perform other related duties as required. Receive requests for emergency and non-emergency law or fire responses. Prioritize and notify the appropriate response unit with alerts, pages and/or verbal assignment calls based on the nature, magnitude, and degree of priority.
Operate an 800 Mhz radio, multi-computer terminals, multi-line 9-1-1 emergency and non-emergency phone system. Directly respond to emergency and non-emergency calls or transfer to appropriate personnel and/or agency.
Communicate with emergency units regarding location details and necessary dispatch adjustments and monitor communications of field personnel to verify addresses, answer questions and look up information for appropriate response.
Relay information from the Incident Commander to arriving units or other agencies and call for additional public safety resources in response to requests from field personnel.
Maintain current information on the location, availability and status of all in-service units to ensure that the most appropriate units are dispatched. Track status of vehicles and equipment on calls and provide on-going updates electronically and verbally to responding field personnel as information is received.
Alert appropriate supervisory personnel of operational needs, high profile incidents or when a unit fails to clear or respond.
Maintain all pertinent information, records and actions taken as required by department policy on a daily basis. Enter all pertinent information about the incident in the computer aided dispatch system.
Provide credible testimony in court when required.
Receive transmitted requests for police emergency assistance and determine type and level of response necessary.
Dispatch and arrange for all appropriate resources and responses to an incident which may include police, fire, medical, vehicle tows, other city departments, and outside agencies within a designated time frame.
Maintain current information on the location, availability, and status of all police squads on duty and notify supervisor of scheduling problems.
Coordinate the activities of special units such as the Ordinance Disposal unit, CIRT, K-9, etc. by locating on-duty and off-duty personnel and monitoring location status of the incident.
Operate and cooperate with other public safety agencies through shared radio channels. Assign tactical radio channels as needed.
Maintain records of street closings and assist in updating information on the CAD system and related files.
Query CAD and other data base systems to provide information for field personnel and prepare reports as directed.
When necessary, provide on-the-job training, coaching and daily observation evaluations to 9-1-1 Telecommunicators and probationary Public Safety Dispatchers.
Monitor weather broadcast for emergency conditions so that proper preparations can be made.
Perform the duties of a 9-1-1 Telecommunicator and change to other dispatching stations as the need arises due to staffing.
Coordinate information on special enforcement activities such as the execution of search warrants, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) incidents and auto/foot pursuits. Coordinate activities of special units such as Ordinance Disposal Unit, SWAT and K-9 by locating on/off duty personnel and monitoring status of incidents.
Monitor special events such as parades, marathons, and other law enforcement details; monitor alarm systems and take appropriate action when these alarms are activated.
Monitor radio traffic from neighboring jurisdictions and inform officers of necessary information.
Provide initial, pre-arrival emergency medical instructions to citizens as needed.

Training and Experience Rating = 100%
The examination for Public Safety Dispatcher will consist of a training and experience rating, comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. Not all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will pass the training and experience rating. The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on your answers to the questions – do not mark “see resume” or “see work history” as a response. Please answer all your questions clearly and completely. Failure to respond could affect your score and final rank on this examination.Eligible List: The names of all applicants who filed a properly completed application and passed the examination/screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for an employment opportunity as a Public Safety Dispatcher. This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to conduct interviews to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for 30 days or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted, informing them that the list has been certified and their status.The names of the top 50 applicants who pass the examination with a score of 60 or higher will be forwarded to the department for further consideration. Veteran's Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process. Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process.
