JOB DESCRIPTION

Whitefish Mountain Resort (Winter Sports, Inc)

Title: Public Relations (PR) Manager

Department: Marketing and Sales

Level: Full Time Regular

FLSA: Exempt

Effective Date: August 2020

General Duties:

Internally the PR Manager reports to the Director of Sales and Marketing, and works closely with all levels of employees including the CEO of the resort. Externally the PR Manager also works with public relations agencies, local tourism entities, as well as local, regional, national and international news media. He/she is an active member of the community and represents Whitefish Mountain Resort at various community meetings. The PR Manager is called upon regularly to make formal and informal presentations to a wide variety of groups and organizations in an effort to further the image and objectives of Whitefish Mountain Resort.

The PR manager reports and distributes information professionally and efficiently in the form of news releases to all media entities which fall within the target of Whitefish Mountain Resort’s sales and marketing plan. PR Manager is responsible for ensuring that all Whitefish Mountain Resort content on the web and in print is accurate. A major role of the PR Manager is to act as the primary spokesperson for WSI.

Job Relationships:

Reports to: Director of Marketing and Sales

Employees Supervised: (2) seasonal snow reporters

Job Specifications:

Four year college degree required PR, Journalism, English/Lit. preferred. Marketing/Communications considered.

Minimum of two years experience in public relations. Same experience at a ski and summer destination resort preferred.

Strong verbal and written skills. This pertains to authoritative knowledge of grammar as well as the proven ability to write in the AP Style. Creative writing skills are also required.

The ideal candidate will have a substantial list of established media contacts in the ski/snowboard industry.

Excellent public speaking skills required.

Excellent organizational skills required

Ability to multi-task, under pressure with a pleasant and positive approach at all times.

Able to communicate to external and internal sources the goals and objectives of Whitefish Mountain Resort that will always reflect the resort in the most professional and positive light.

Ability to work under pressure and in a busy environment.

Basic office skills, typing, good telephone etiquette and manners, etc.

Computer experience required, specifically word processing and spreadsheet.

Ability to prioritize, organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously with accuracy and detail.

Knowledge of audio/visual equipment set up and operation.

Ability to develop effective working relationships with fellow workers and supervisors; ability to deal courteously and tactfully with public.

Ability to work within framework of standard policies and procedures.

Weekend & Holiday work will be required.

Some evening hosting of media will be required.

Some travel will be required.

Liaison for film crews shooting on location and be a link with US Forest Service for permitting where necessary.

Photography as needed and required.

Specific Duties:

Media Relations

Serve as point person for media relations and inquiries.

Serve as the primary spokesperson for the company.

Create and distribute company press releases frequently and as needed for Whitefish Mountain Resort editorial exposure based on mountain happenings and events and other news that is of interest to media and the public.

When appropriate prepare, guide and utilize various members of the Whitefish Mountain Resort management team as spokespersons for media inquiries.

Manage all media relations needs; set up interviews with staff, write copy points and fact sheets as needed, field calls and opportunities as they emerge.

Search out new associations that would provide PR opportunities (NATJA, PRSA for example)

Conduct print, radio, and television interviews.

Work with events department on event publicity.

Pitch creative story ideas to local and national media.

Seek out, establish, coordinate and host press trips.

Host visiting local, regional and national media on press trips.

Serve as chief of press for any major events.

Serve as Public Information Officer (PIO) in a crisis.

Corporate Communications

Manage internal communications.

Make internal announcements.

Serve as the primary contact for internal and external sources of communications for all company information to be presented by the vision of the executive team and the director of sales and marketing.

Attend marketing and sales staff meetings as needed.

Coordinate mountain-wide communications efforts.

Snow and Trail Reporting

Manage the Whitefish Mountain Resort snow reporting service and two employees in winter.

Act as a secondary resource for snow reporting.

Content

Serve as copywriter as needed for brochures, collateral, and website.

Write in-season weekly “Inversions” articles for the Flathead Beacon.

Coordinate, create and distribute e-newsletter in conjunction with website.

Content control of Whitefish Mountain Resort newsletter including approval for content prior to print.

Maintain online press room.

Contribute to the Resort’s Blog

Community

Act as the resort’s point of contact for all media and communication related items for Travel Montana, Glacier Country, FCVB, WCVB, and local area chambers as directed by supervisors and executive team.

Attend community functions and organizations as required in order to disseminate accurate, positive and useful information to our public audiences.

Represent Whitefish Mountain Resort in the Flathead Tourism Crisis Management Communicators group.

Work Environment:

Ability to sit for a minimum of 8 hours.

Must be able to ski or snowboard at a minimum of intermediate level.

Worksite is 70% office, 30% on-mountain or with media – all 4 seasons.
