Founded in 1838, The Pennington School is an independent, coeducational school serving day and boarding students in grades 6 through 12. Total student enrollment is approximately 535, of which 25% are boarding students.
Reporting to the Assistant Director of the Operations Department, the Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for providing various facility and maintenance initiatives as well as operational services that are critical to creating a successful environment for our School community. This is accomplished through the maintenance of all campus buildings, including improvement initiatives, by providing thorough and detailed attention.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintenance of all carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and ventilation systems and completion of all preventive maintenance work orders
Respond to emergency calls for system and equipment failure
Troubleshoot, diagnose and order parts and materials for job completion
Read blueprints and schematics; prepare sketches as required to document work
Adhere to operational policies and procedures
Perform additional duties as requested by the Facilities Manager in order to ensure the effective and efficient operation in the community
Participate in general maintenance activities on campus buildings as well as dorms and faculty residences
Deliver on-time services to students, faculty, and staff for all buildings on campus and effectively communicate with community members
Maintain a clean and orderly workspace in all work areas
Perform tasks which are supportive to the essential functions of the job, which may be altered or redesigned as necessary
Ability to regularly work beyond and outside of the typical workday and on weekends in order to meet the needs of the School
Assist in other areas of the department as needed, including campus event set-up, athletic field preparation, snow removal, etc.
Essential Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED is required. Other course work in maintenance and carpentry techniques is a plus
Experience with general maintenance, repairs, and carpentry is required
Skills in facility maintenance and repairs to perform routine and non-routine services
Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and order parts and materials for job completion
Ability to adjust to new industry techniques and become familiar with new equipment as required
Ability to implement all plans and work as assigned
Ability to adhere to operational policies and procedures
Ability to plan, organize, and schedule the work in a manner consistent with efficient standards;
Flexibility to assist in other areas of the department as needed, including campus event set-up, athletic field preparation, snow removal, etc.
The candidate is required to have or be willing to obtain within 12 months of hire a NJ Black Seal Boiler Operator License and NJ Certified Pool Operator’s Certificate
The candidate is required to obtain/maintain a Commercial Driver License ("CDL") with the required School Bus Endorsements and, as such, shall be subject to drug and alcohol testing pursuant to federal law
Must successfully complete the State of New Jersey criminal background check
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
This Maintenance Mechanic position is full-time, twelve (12) months per year, non-exempt (hourly), and benefits-eligible.
The working environment is an office and school environment on a 55-acre campus in Pennington, New Jersey. The ability to walk up and down stairs, attend meetings in varying locations throughout campus, and continually use computers and related office equipment is required. Not all buildings on campus have elevators.
Ability to lift 50 pounds; over 50 pounds must use the aid of a hand truck or get assistance, and able to move light furniture. Ability to stand on one's feet for a long period of time; bending and extensive walking is required.
The ability to push and pull and climb and descend the ladder to 8/10 feet or higher is necessary.
