Live-in aide position available for 63 year old paraplegic stroke victim: Experience preferred/will
train.
Hello, my name is Nick. My father is 63 years old and had a major stroke and is in a "locked-in" state. He's paralyzed below the shoulders but only weighs about 140 lbs. at the moment. He is 100 percent coherent and can say small words, can shake his head yes or no, and we also have a letter board that you can use to communicate if you don't understand him and he'll spell it out. He is able to tell you if he has pain, an itch, needs to be changed, etc. . . He has full use of facial expressions and he's smiling and laughing most of the time. He requires a companion, someone who could be part of the family. We aren't sure how much time he has left but we'd like to make his time as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. Ideally, a good candidate would be experienced in the care-giving field (specifically with paraplegics), takes pride in helping others, and has a good positive mentality. He's pretty low maintenance given his circumstances, including occasional feeding (primarily through a PEG tube), cleaning of his living quarters, and to be shifted to prevent bed sores. Other than an hour or two in the morning and in the night, most of your time will be watching TV with him, and playing a poker game on the TV (he loves it!), light cleaning, and moving him/changing him when necessary. We are currently looking for help 3-5 days a week (Tues, Wed., Thurs. minimum) . We have a nice warm home and an extra bedroom if needed. Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Home management tasks including housekeeping (patient's bedroom &laundry)
2. Prepare and serve simple modified diets according to instruction and assist with feeding as necessary. Currently, he's strictly fed bolus feedings through a g-tube.
3. Assist with bathing and dressing (Every other day with bathing from his bed, he's usually wearing a hospital gown)
4. Assist with incontinence as needed, must be knowledgeable on the prevention of bedsores.
5. Experience in the use of a Hoyer Lift, for transferring from bed to wheelchair and vice versa.
6. Provide routine skin care. Applying lotion to face and other necessary parts of the body.
7. Assist with home therapy (range of motion, speech, etc. . .)
8. Administering medicines through his PEG tube is a plus.
Qualifications:
Must have a phone or a way to communicate daily
Must have valid Drivers License or ID card (will conduct a background check)
Must state and confirm that you are able to work with no physical restrictions
Physical Requirements and Working conditions:
Job involves performing tasks. Work requires adherence to precise procedures and standards involving a high degree of accuracy in observing, recording information if needed.
Physical Demands: Appreciable physical effort or strain. Moderately heavy activity. May include lifting, constant stooping and walking. My father weighs approximately 140 lbs.
Working Environment: Our home, a bedroom will be provided, as well as access to our home(kitchen, washer/dryer, etc. . .)
