Position Summary
We are looking for a reliable Short‑Order Chef who thrives in a fast‑paced diner setting. In this role, you will prepare, cook, and plate breakfast and lunch items (especially on the griddle) to our high standards, all while working in view of guests. The successful candidate is someone who can maintain food quality, work cleanly and efficiently, and step in to cover shifts when other staff are unavailable.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare ingredients (chopping, slicing, portioning, mise en place) ahead of and during service.
Cook breakfast and lunch menu items on the griddle, including but not limited to eggs, pancakes, bacon, sandwiches, burgers, hash browns, etc.
Ensure every order is cooked properly and presented attractively, meeting Abbie’s Diner’s quality standards.
Work efficiently in a fast‑paced environment; manage multiple orders simultaneously, especially during peak hours.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of your station and all kitchen areas visible to customers; sanitize surfaces and equipment regularly.
Adhere strictly to food safety and hygiene regulations (proper cooking temperatures, safe handling, storage, cross‑contamination prevention).
Assist with inventory control: monitor supplies, communicate shortages, ensure fresh stock, rotate food.
Help with opening and closing duties and cleaning tasks as needed.
Be flexible and dependable: able to cover for other chefs or staff who call out.
Required Qualifications
Previous experience as a short‐order cook, grill cook, or similar role in a diner, café, or fast‑casual restaurant.
Proven skill working with a griddle and ability to cook multiple items to order.
Ability to work under pressure, maintain speed without sacrificing quality.
Strong attention to detail, especially around presentation and consistency.
Excellent hygiene and food safety awareness; required certification(s) as needed by local health department.
Reliable, punctual, and able to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays.
Good communication skills, must be able to interact with English speaking customers.
Preferred Qualifications
Culinary training or certification.
Experience with open‑kitchen environments (cooking in view of customers).
Familiarity with POS or kitchen ticket systems.
Ability to multitask well and prioritize orders.
Working Conditions
Open kitchen layout; your work is visible to customers.
Standing for long periods; exposure to heat, steam, and cooking equipment.
Fast service environment especially during breakfast and lunch rush.
May require early morning hours.
