Job Description

We are looking for a

Portfolio Manager to join the Wood Mackenzie Energy Management’s Power team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing risk management services for our retail power clients. This includes short and long-term load forecasting, hedging, advisory services, market research, and forensic analyses. The position is based out of Wood Mackenzie’s NYC office, conveniently located next to Manhattan’s Bryant Park.

About the role

· Management of daily bidding and scheduling processes on behalf of clients

· Reviewing, discussing, and developing strategies for the management of a client’s forward position

· Running pricing requests by which power hedges are procured on behalf of clients.

· Communicating and discussing with client’s all factors that impact their books

· Working with the Product Development Team to assist with the design and release of new products

· Quality assurance and report generation focused on variances between market valuation sources and GEM proprietary data

· Managing end to end invoice dispute resolution with the aim of getting to the bottom of inexplicable changes or discrepancies that impact our clients’ bottom line

· Improving current processes by automating critical tasks using technology (visual basic, python, etc)

· Leading weekly client calls and answering questions on the fly

· Managing customer data: identifying problems and communicating to clients, coordinating with development team to implement new customer data processes

· Following energy market news and explaining impacts of important market rule changes. Working with regulatory team to gain context on new regulatory developments

· Keeping tabs on market conditions and suggesting new market entry opportunities for clients

· Understanding current market fundamentals and using this knowledge to add value for clients. Staying up to date with short-term and medium-term weather forecasts, recent forward mark trends, natural gas price trends.

· Performing ad-hoc analyses to answer client questions about their business, including revenue, forecast error, etc.

· You are a highly quantitative individual with an eye for design and a strength in data analysis and manipulation

· You are organized and comfortable multi-tasking in a time-sensitive, often high-pressure environment

· You have a strong personal intellectual interest in both power markets and the power industry ecosystem as a whole

· You pride yourself in attention to detail and data quality

· You have client management skills:

o Ability to manage client expectations so timelines can be achieved

o Communicate clearly with clients, both in writing and over the phone

o Ability to tailor explanations to complex market concepts based on each client’s level of sophistication/ experience with energy

o Respond to clients in timely manner, even if the answer is not readily available

· You are a self-starter and appreciate creative latitude

Qualifications

Required (or must have) qualifications/skills

· Demonstrated working knowledge of Excel VBA with an emphasis on data transformation/cleaning, modeling, automation, prototyping, or analyses

· Must be self-motivated, customer-service oriented and capable of working both independently and in a team environment

· Experience with retail power markets

· Continued desire and ability to learn is a must. The energy industry is ever-changing and those with passion for understanding it will thrive

preferred (or nice to have) qualifications/skills

· Advanced Excel skills: Pivot Tables, complex lookup formulas, ability to track dependencies to understand models and trace errors, use keyboard shortcuts

· Understanding of statistical regression models

· Education & Experience: At least a bachelor's degree in Arts or Science, with emphasis in economics, business, computer science, data analytics, statistics or a related field. Master’s degree or higher is preferred.

· 2-4 years of relevant professional or academic experience, including some experience with data transformation and complex datasets
