Maternity Leave Position: Full-time or Part-time Elementary and Middle School Counselor

Santa Fe School for the Arts & Sciences, an expeditionary learning school, is seeking an experienced, dynamic, collaborative school counselor to work with our school and community while our school counselor is away on maternity leave. This position will be from February through April, 2025. We are looking for a full-time or part-time counselor, about 20-30 hours per week.

The successful candidate will understand the developmental needs of children (ages 3-14) and combine their knowledge with humor, energy, and a desire to inspire students to promote the school's character traits of compassion, courage, respect, trust, honesty and stewardship.

Our school counselor works with many age groups and classes on our campus. The counselor works closely with our staff and families to support children in their academic and social growth. Our teachers are committed to the social emotional development of every child, which is at the core of the teaching and learning here at Arts & Sciences. Therefore, the ideal candidate must have experience working within a school community.

Qualifications and Attributes

- A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Art Therapy, Counseling, or Social Work.

- Licensed Art Therapist, Counselor, Social Worker or the equivalent LPCC, LCSW, LMSW or LMHC with scheduled offsite supervision.

- Certifications or extensive training in art therapy, play therapy, sand tray, children’s mental health.

- Has experience discussing topics related to: mindfulness, emotional regulation, identity, friendships, consent, racism/classism, gender, sexuality, puberty, and issues of emotional distress and self-harm.

- Has worked in a school setting and/or with groups of children.

- Has experience working collaboratively with parents, families, and teams.

- Is able to understand the developmental needs of 3-14 year olds and apply this toward working within the classroom, in small groups, and one-on-one.

- Effective time management and scheduling skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Work with students in individual, small group and classroom settings

- Responsible and effective communication with families

- Create, maintain and promote a safe, nurturing learning environment that responds to students' academic, social, and emotional growth

- Work closely with the principal, middle school head and teachers to assess student, family, and community needs

- Work with the larger community network of support for referrals, crisis intervention, and planning visiting experts to share with students, staff and community.

- Teach 1-2 classes per week

- Willing to attend field trips with classes

- Attend staff and divisional meetings, workshops and conferences.

- Attend some evening and community events.

Professional Development

Faculty and staff at Arts & Sciences develop a culture where professional development is expected and embedded in the daily fabric of our school. Professional development includes large group presentations, grade level or team meetings, workshops, peer observations, team teaching, and offsite institutes and workshops.
