YOUTH CONSERVATION CORPS (YCC) CREW MEMBER

This job involves both maintenance of a commercial building and food production (community garden). Social distancing and sanitization practices will be carefully followed, and job duties will be performed outdoors.

YCC Crew Members will gain job experience through hands-on projects that increase skills related to, and appreciation for gardens, education, sustainability, and children at play. This is a paid internship, for ages 14-25 working 35 hours per week, M-F, for approximately 22 weeks. If under the age of 16, you will be required to have a work permit.

Per government requirements, crewmembers must be between the ages of 14-25, NM residents, be unemployed at the time of hire, and have a work permit if under the age of 16.

DESCRIPTION:

Crew Members will work under the supervision of our Facilities Manager and a Crew Leader to build and maintain child-centered museum conservation projects- such as building a composting exhibit, planting, building, maintaining, and refurbishing garden exhibits including raised garden beds, renovating a picnic area and other landscaping projects. Crew Members may also assist in developing and implementing new ideas for programs, exhibits, and /opportunities for museum guests (specifically young children and their families).

The program includes professional skills training in areas such as Sustainable Gardening, Landscaping, Construction, Children’s Educational Programming and Inquiry-Based Learning, Composting, Adobe Making, and job skills.

DUTIES:

Check-in and out with crew leader daily and complete assigned tasks related to Earthworks programming and outdoor exhibits

Complete basic construction and landscaping tasks under the supervision of crew leader and SFCM Facilities Manager

Assist Crew Leader in maintaining a garden log to report on tasks completed, successes, and challenges in collaboration with Earthworks team

Attend weekly YCC team meetings

Participate in professional development training, such as (but not limited to) CPR first-aid, inquiry-based learning, sustainable gardening, and outdoor construction.

Assist Earthworks Educator with the facilitation of garden science educational programs for young children and their families.

Assist in developing and implementing garden-based programming & exhibits

MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Reliable, hard-working, team player.

Responsible, effective communicator, friendly, and willing to learn.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to speak Spanish, Tewa, or ASL.

Experience working with children/education.

Science, Engineering, Landscape, Garden, Technology or Design experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to lift, carry and otherwise move up to 50 pounds on a regular basis

Ability to sit, stand, bend, kneel, reach, push, pull, climb or walk for various lengths of time throughout the day

Ability to use ladders, step stools, electrical equipment and hand tools safely

Ability to utilize computer equipment to complete daily work responsibilities

Ability to operate fax/copy machines, telephone, calculator, and general office equipment
