Housed within the Commissioner’s Office, the Director of Tribal Affairs serves as a direct link between the 11 federally recognized Indian Tribes in Minnesota and the Commissioner’s Office. As a subject matter expert, the role focuses on government-to-government relations, communication, and education to enhance understanding and build relationships relating to Tribal-State and agency coordination. As a member of the Commissioner’s Office team, the Director of Tribal Affairs will work with agency Assistant Commissioners, Communications, Government Relations, Community Affairs, policy and legal teams, and Division Directors to build Tribal affairs strategies that can grow relationships and help further agency initiatives. These strategies and initiatives will ensure consistent, regular, and meaningful coordination, collaboration, and consultation in accordance with Minn. Stat. 10.65: Government-to-Government Relationship with Tribal Governments. In addition, the role will coordinate with the Governor’s Office Tribal Relations team to ensure cross-agency coordination, and other duties as assigned by the Commissioner.Minimum QualificationsFour (4) years of advanced professional experience administering, coordinating or leading programs with tribal governments. This experience must include an understanding of Tribal sovereignty and government-to-government relations and experience in the development and/or analysis of policies impacting American Indian Tribal Governments.Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to establish credibility within the American Indian community, including the 11 Sovereign Tribal Nations, to develop authentic relationships across differences, and to bring people together.Strong written and oral communication skills to present information to stakeholders and lead meetings.Demonstrated critical thinking, problem-solving and organizational skills.Valid Class D Driver's License (see below additional requirements)The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency will not sponsor applicants for work visas.
