Position Summary

HIGHLIGHTS

The SUNY Geneseo Facilities Department is looking for a reliable and dedicated individual to join their team as a Maintenance Assistant.In this position, you’ll be responsible for tasks in the mechanical, building construction, motor equipment, and electrical trades. These tasks may include:

routine maintenance

installation and repair tasks

assisting in troubleshooting systems

use of power tools, shop equipment, and measuring/testing instruments

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership ( NYS CSEA -P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.Successful completion of the NYS CSEA -P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math coursework, 45 hours of technical communications coursework, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading coursework. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA -P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.Preferred Qualifications DEPARTMENTAL OPERATING NEEDS

Proven ability to apply knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, safety standards, and procedures of the trade(s) as it relates to the job duties

Ability to read plans, specifications, manuals, and blueprints.

Ability to understand and follow instructions and read, write, and communicate.

Record of dependability and past work performance, including a satisfactory time and attendance record.

Possession of computer skills adequate to work with computerized maintenance management systems and other computerized applications as assigned.

Change lock combinations, install locks, clean, and repair them

Provide maintenance on equipment such as sprinkler systems, exit lights, generators, pumps, motors, air handlers, exhaust fans, make up air systems, VAV , hot water systems, building envelope, roof, and drain systems

Assist in painting and decorating work by performing interior and exterior painting not requiring fine finish or decorative treatment, staining and finishing wood and furniture, and painting equipment

Perform repairs to doors, walls, windows, window sashes, floors, stairs, railings, glass, furniture, masonry, locks and door hardware

Repair, rebuild, and assist in installing metal, slate, shingle, and built-up roofs

Operate machine tools including hand and portable power tools, shop equipment, and measuring and testing instruments

Repair, service, and maintain automotive and mechanical equipment

Point up brick and stonework, patch plaster walls, set tiles, lay brick and stone, and finish concrete work

Function 2: Plumbing Activities

Perform routine replacement and repair of plumbing and steamfitting equipment

Install new equipment by cutting, fitting and threading pipe, removing existing pipes and fixtures, repairing domestic steam equipment, and overhauling vacuum pumps

Replace fixtures that have drains or water, i.e., toilets and sinks

Unclog drains and pipes in new systems or repair in old systems

Soldering and brazing

Function 3: HVAC Activities

Operate and maintain heating and hot water equipment by replacing parts such as filters, belts, motors, and pumps

Work with geothermal systems

Work with steam and associated parts: traps, spence valve, lines, condensation systems, tube bundles, valves, and some controls

Work with hot water systems, heating and domestic systems, HWT , pumps, explanation tanks, piping, and repair of the piping system

Repair and replace heating and air conditioning parts

Work with make up air units, exhaust fans, VAV , and humidifiers

Function 4: Electrical Activities

Install and maintain lighting fixtures, outlets, exit signs, and switches

Replace light ballasts

Repair and install wiring, plugs, conduit, and wire mold

Repair and maintain controls and low voltage systems

Make repairs after power outages

Lay and repair electrical cables and wires

Function 5: Building Controls Activities

Work with building controls and the campus Energy Management System

Work with pneumatics, thermostats, valves, motor drives, dampers, fire alarms, electronic door locking systems, and lighting controls

Work with computers and associated controls

Function 6: Supervision

Instruct SG-6 in day-to-day operations and duties

Check on and report on the job status of SG-6
