Vegetable Farm Pack Shed Manager

Vacancy expired!

Common Hands Farm is hiring a pack shed manager to begin training during the month of July and take over managing the pack shed at the end of August when our current employee goes back to school!

Common Hands Farm, a biodynamic vegetable farm outside of Philmont NY, is looking to hire a pack shed manager to begin working on the farm in April, and managing the pack shed mid-May through the rest of the year. We are a family owned farm, always working on building our community, through our farm crew, our CSA, our customers at the markets, our volunteer and donation programs. Community is really important to us, as is food access!

This is our eleventh year of production and we grow over 150 crop varieties and attend 4 local farmers markets, have a large CSA, and work with many restaurant and wholesale outlets. Through the labor that we share on our farm, new farmers can learn about vegetable production farming , soil and plant growth, holistic farm management, greenhouse skills, regenerative agriculture basics, and attend farmers markets. We also have a value-added food enterprise in which we make and sell sauces, ferments, dressings, and other tasty things with our crops to preserve our bounty.

Everything we grow is organically grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, etc. We make our own compost.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES for the PACKING SHED:

For this job, organization skills and an ability to multitask are imperative.

The main tasks you will perform are:

-Keeping inventory of our crops in the walk-in cooler, and dry storage shed

-Cleaning and processing crops during our harvests (ex: washing and spinning salad, using the root washer to clean potatoes, washing cucumbers, etc). Attention to detail and staying organized is necessary. You get to be part of the very end of our crops' lives on the farm, ensuring they look beautiful.

-Packing items for orders and markets. (weighing, counting out, bagging, boxing, and checking off the items as you go, to fulfill wholesale orders and prepare the crops for farmers markets as well)

- Delegating tasks within the pack shed to other employees (telling someone an order to work on filling, a crop to clean or organize, etc)

-Communicating clearly with farm management about needs, quality, and tasks both unfinished and completed

QUALIFICATIONS:

Reliability, ability to self-manage, self-motivation, and attention to detail are MUST HAVES.

We prefer that applicants have some prior farming experience even if it is limited. Employees must have the ability to consistently arrive on time and ready to work.

If you do not have prior farming experience, we can consider other similar jobs as useful. For example, working in a kitchen or other food facility can help with the attention to detail and multi tasking of this job.

Passion about food and the food system are important for this job position.

When?

Monday-Friday from 8:30-3.

This job will begin with general farm training and orientation and move into pack shed management.

Pay?

The pay is negotiable and based on experience, but begins at $17.50.
