NYC Parks manages more than 30,000 acres or 14% of the city’s land, encompassing more than 5,000 individual properties. Our diverse set of assets includes recreational facilities, nature centers, historic buildings and structures, golf courses, athletic fields, playgrounds, tennis courts, public pools, public restroom buildings, retaining walls and nearly 14 miles of beaches. Major Responsibilities
Under general direction, with wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment, coordinate and direct employees, volunteers, and contracted vendors in caring for the horticultural assets of Washington Square Park, including preparing sites, project execution, engagement, outreach, communications and documentation.
When needed, directly execute horticultural tasks including but not limited to planting, weeding, mulching, mowing, pruning, preparing soil and seed beds.
Develop and implement horticultural training for staff and volunteers with a focus on vegetation removals in garden beds, decorative plantings, lawn restoration, erosion control, clean-ups, street tree care and other horticultural projects.
Maintain accurate and timely records and prepare written reports, including scheduling of work with various internal divisions and horticultural contractors including but not limited to irrigation systems, ground hydrant repairs, lawn maintenance, tree pruning, stump removal, equipment maintenance and plant deliveries.
Coordinate horticulture efforts with other work happening within and outside the division, with local park managers and the Washington Square Park Conservancy.
Scope and acquire the resources necessary to execute horticulture projects across landscapes of Washington Square Park including but not limited to seed, sod, soil, flowering bulbs, herbaceous plants and shrubs.
Supervise employees and volunteers and instruct them in proper horticulture techniques and the proper use and care of equipment and materials including two-cycle equipment such as mowers, hedge-trimmers and chainsaws.

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
