Position Overview
We’re looking for a strategic, organized, and people first General Manager to lead our growing team at our Greenpoint, Brooklyn location. This role will ensure strong daily operations while driving alignment between studio management, creative direction, and long term company goals. You’ll oversee our Assistant General Manager (AGM), own internal communications, and serve as a key connector between teams - from operations to events to product rollouts.
This is a leadership role that blends operations with brand oversight — perfect for someone who thrives in fast paced environments, has experience in management, and understands how to bring structure to creativity.
Key Responsibilities
Team & Communication
Oversee hiring and onboarding of Assistant General Manager (AGM), with an emphasis on ownership and accountability.
Work with AGM to effectively hire and train new Art Cafe team members
Directly manage AGM
Create and publish team schedules on a regular basis (e.g., bi-weekly or monthly). Assign opening and closing shifts, ensuring clear communication of responsibilities to all team members.
Ensure that one manager is always on-site and that team always has a central point of contact; maintain and manage AGM scheduling accordingly.
Send team emails on a weekly basis - collecting notes from all management levels. Track follow through and team implementation of notes or policies outlined in team/ location specific communication.
Work with AGM to collect information and compile daily service reports.
Scheduling & Staffing
Review and approve team schedules prepared with AGM.
Coordinate staffing and training for all specialized classes and workshops, including external instructors.
Work with the Operations team to optimize schedules, inventory reporting and general operations of the Greenpoint location.
Submit team hours for payroll approval.
Submit weekly cash and tip logs.
Events & Programs
Act as primary liaison for private events between locations. oversee staffing, inventory, and on-site execution.
Manage all workshops (excluding Build-A-Chair), including calendar, staffing, and instructor onboarding.
Brand & Training
Lead top-down brand management: uphold hospitality standards, visual presentation, and team culture.
Collaborate on development and rollout of training documents and internal systems.
Support AGM in executing training and service checklist accountability.
Product & Sales Coordination
Partner with Product Development to plan sales strategy and rollout for new items.
Oversee staff training and in-store execution of product launches.
Inventory & Operations
Determine and delegate ownership of inventory reporting (in partnership with AGM).
Coordinate with the Pottery Manager where applicable for cross-functional planning.
Maintenance & Facilities
Act as point of contact for all onsite maintenance needs.
Delineate maintenance issues into clear categories:
In-House: Handled directly by location specific teams.
External: Requires Ops coordination or outside vendors.
Works with Operations team to think strategically about facility investments (e.g., repairs vs. replacement), to ensure long term cost efficiency.
Work with the Operations Team and AGM to delegate work needed to maintain garden and storefront.
Requirements
3+ years experience in multi-unit retail, hospitality, studio, or creative operations
Proven team management and training experience
Ability to balance operational execution with creative thinking
Excellent communicator, both written and verbal
Comfortable managing schedules, staffing needs, and vendor coordination
Organized, self-motivated, and highly accountable
A passion for handmade goods, thoughtful retail, and creative community
Positive attitude and passion for both the Happy Medium brand and central mission.
