The project aims to foster stronger relationships between librarians and teens by focusing on the voices and perspectives of BIPOC youth, enabling librarians to better understand and serve this growing community of readers. Through school-based programming, participatory research, and professional development for librarians, the project will facilitate more inclusive and culturally responsive library services.General Description:Under the supervision of the Project Manager and Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant will play a vital role in supporting on-site data collection and analysis. Responsibilities will include qualitative and quantitative data collection, conducting focus groups with BIPOC teens, coordinating with librarians and school staff, and participating in interviews and classroom observations in project schools. The specialty of the Research Assistant will ideally be in library and information science with a strong focus on serving BIPOC communities.Time Commitment:Part-time, 7-10 hours per week through June 30, 2026, with a focus on qualitative coding and big data analysis of focus group transcripts. Travel to various schools throughout the year will be required for data collection purposes. Two vacancies are available for this position.Other Duties
Observe project-related classes in schools, taking detailed field notes and using curriculum-specific observation protocols.
Conduct focus groups with BIPOC teens to gather insights into their manga reading habits and library use.
Conduct interviews with school librarians and staff to gather feedback on professional development and service improvements.
Interface with project staff, librarians, and evaluation partners as needed.
Participate in biweekly research meetings and occasional staff meetings.
Travel to school sites as needed, approximately twice per month.
Assist in qualitative and quantitative data analysis and report writing.
Contribute to the development of research instruments and data collection protocols.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Completion of the iSchool Inclusion Institute.
Research experience in qualitative methods with BIPOC youth.
Experience working with youth and educators, particularly in diverse or underrepresented communities.
Demonstrated proficiency in Qualitative analysis software, Citation analysis tools (Refworks, Zotero) Word Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel) and Google applications (Google Calendar, Google Drive, Google Docs, etc.).
Technologically adept and comfortable with various online platforms and apps.
Excellent writing skills.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Experience working on a team.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with teens, librarians, and colleagues.
Flexibility and the ability to work independently.
Willingness to learn new research tools, including R and Dedoose.
Other duties as assigned.
