Job Title: Summer 2025 PhD Synthetic Chemist InternSummary:Join the Tire and Rubber Technology Team as an intern for Summer 2025. As a Synthetic Chemist Intern, you will have experience developing new synthetic routes for silane molecules to meet targeted performancerequirements. You will work within a team of synthetic chemists and be expected to lead their program throughout the internship.Responsibilities Include:

Synthesize experimental silane molecules

Work with other team members to synthesize, characterize, ship, and other activities related to evaluating new molecules for performance

Optimize synthetic routes as needed

Maintain an organized lab that adheres to all safety requirements

Document experiments in an electronic lab notebook

Be accountable for safely planning experiments and handling and disposing of reagents

Participate in literature reviews to develop expertise in the chemistry practiced

Participate as an active team member of the synthesis group on new molecule design and synthesis

Propose synthetic routes for target molecules

Troubleshoot quality issues (coproducts, material compatibilities, etc.) as required

Qualifications:The following are required for the role

Pursuing a PhD in Organic Chemistry, Organometallic Chemistry, Polymer Science, Material Science, Chemical Engineering or a related field with an anticipated graduation date of Winter 2025 or Spring 2026

Strong synthetic organic chemistry skills

Preferred Requirements

Silicon chemistry experience is a plus

Program Requirements

The candidate must be actively enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at the time of application and for at least one semester following the conclusion of the internship.

The candidate is expected to be available to work in person 40 hours a week for 10-12 weeks between May and August.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, bend, stoop, crouch, twist, turn, lift, and move about the facility. Walking, walking on irregular surfaces, and balancing will be required. Reaching, feeling, finger movement, grasping, hearing, sight, and the ability to speak clearly will be required. Regularly lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 50 lbs. The ability to wear personal protective equipment, and the ability to pass a fit test and wear a respirator is required for most positions.The environment for this position is a laboratory setting. Candidates should be able to adapt to a traditional business environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.Students enrolled in a Graduate degree level program are eligible to receive a higher rate than the range listed below.
