Req Number 141617Job DescriptionPerforms a variety of diversified and complex laboratory tests. Processes various blood samples in accordance with the Blood Bank's policies and procedures manual. Issues blood components following established guidelines. May perform teaching duties related to training students and new employees.Job Responsibility

Performs assays of biological specimens according to established policies and procedures, utilizing specific instruments, equipment, reagents, and techniques.

Reviews and reports patients' results within established turnaround time.

Alerts supervisor to problems and/or unusual or critical results, as they occur

Reviews 'critical' level results and notifies patient's doctor of same. Maintains proper documentation of action.

Maintains equipment in good operating condition by performing routine preventive maintenance, including start up and shut down procedures of major instruments. Maintains documentation of procedures.

Performs and documents Quality Control Procedures, blood product quality control and alerts supervisor to failed results.

Treats receipt and analysis of proficiency test samples in the same manner as patients specimens.

Follows the Laboratory's policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.

Identifies and corrects problems that may adversely affect test performance or results reporting, notifies supervisor when appropriate.

Documents corrective action taken when test systems deviate from the Laboratory's established performance specifications.

Monitors and trains students as directed by the pathologist and area supervisor.

Utilizes Laboratory Computer System for procedures necessary for processing specimens, donors and unit information and reporting results according to department policies and procedures.

Troubleshoots equipment as necessary to correct malfunctions. Maintains proper documentation of action taken.

Maintains blood inventory and orders as needed.

Performs donor history, physical and processing for quicker availability of units for patient's use.

Performs venipuncture on inpatients and/or outpatients as required.

Performs special test procedures and assists in donor recruitment as directed by Pathologist and area supervisor.

Maintains supplies needed for donor area and informs supervisor in advance when orders need to placed.

Maintains donor files and quality control records and charts.

Obtains and interprets information in terms of the donor/patient needs.

Observes whole blood and aphaeresis donor requirements in terms of medical history, physical requirements and deferral criteria.

Performs donor arm preparation, collects whole blood ,single donor platelets and attends to donor reactions according to established policies and procedures

Operates equipment such as automated scales, high determination equipment and sophisticated aphaeresis collection apparatus, as needed

Assists with physical set-up for donor collection to afford privacy and confidentiality of donor's information history

Responds appropriately to donor reactions to whole blood and aphaeresis collection.

Maintains cleanliness of work and surrounding area, and follows established safety and infection control procedures

Assists in revision and update of Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) manual.

Participates in Quality Improvement teams and adheres to customer service guidelines.

Performs cryopreservation, thawing, washing, re-suspension and quality control on peripheral blood and bone marrow stem cells according to established procedures.

Assists in notifying blood donors when transfusion transmitted viral testing is abnormal.

Considers appropriate psychosocial aspects of care

Performs related duties, as required.

ADA Essential FunctionsPHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Occasional pushing, stooping, stretching, pulling, lifting (objects 5 to 10 lbs)

Frequent standing, sitting, walking, carrying of small objects.

Job Qualification

Bachelor Degree in Medical Technology or related field, required. ASCP/NCA Certification in Blood Bank, preferred.

New York State Clinical Laboratory License and Registration.

Minimum of one (1) year recent experience in clinical laboratory as a blood bank technologist, required. Aphaeresis experience, preferred.
