Acts as a liaison between translation service requestors, the Language Access Services Department, and external translation vendors. Provides language translation services for patients, families, visitors, clinicians, and staff. Supports the delivery of interpretation services by providing in-person, telephone and video interpreter services as available. Ensures that all translation and interpretation communications are conveyed in a manner that is complete, appropriate, and accurate. High School Diploma or passage of a high school equivalency exam.
Bilingual in English and Spanish.Fluent in writing, speaking, and interpreting both English and Spanish as evidenced by third party testing selected by The MetroHealth System.
Obtains the minimum required score on all components of the pre-employment proficiency test.
Completion of an accredited 40-hour Medical Interpretation training program, or completes within 90 days of hire.
Certified Medical Translator through the American Translators Association (ATA) or a similar accredited Medical Translator certification program, or obtains within 12 months of hire.
Certified Medical Interpreter through the National Board for Certified Medical Interpreters or a similar accredited Medical Interpreter certification program, or obtains within 18 months of hire.
1 year of proven, related experience in a relevant linguistic and cultural position.
Experience working in a diverse staff/patient/community setting, including displaying cultural sensitivity.
Working knowledge of Medical Terminology and Anatomy in English and Spanish.
Ability to work independently and perform well in potentially stressful circumstances.
Strong organization, prioritization, and time management skills.
Presents a professional demeanor, including accepting all interpreter assignments.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
Advanced computer, software, and equipment skills, including but not limited to electronic medical record systems, email, document and spreadsheet software, telephonic equipment, video equipment, and office equipment.
Preferred:
Degree in Linguistics and/or advanced linguistic education.
Coursework in Medical Terminology and Anatomy.
Certified Medical Interpreter.
Certified Medical Translator.Physical Requirements:
May sit, stand, stoop, bend, and ambulate intermittently during the day.
May need to sit or stand for extended periods.
See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
Finger dexterity to operate office equipment required.
May need to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds on occasion.
