Bower Tree Preschool is looking for an assistant teacher and maternity leave assistant!
We are a certified in-home Montessori/Waldorf hybrid program established in 2020, located in a NE Portland home and currently serving 7 families. Our program is dedicated to the creation of a warm familial environment defined by daily and weekly rhythms that support the unfolding of the child’s spirit. We value ritual and ceremony, storytelling, seasonal festivals and free play in addition to the Montessori method. We “follow the child” by supporting children in flowing between work and play in an atmosphere permeated with music, poetry, and purposeful domestic activity. Children spend time outside every day under the branches of a large sycamore maple, alongside three fruit trees, where they can help care for our menagerie of rabbits and quail, gather eggs and herbs and other produce for our meals, and exercise their bodies with vigorous play in all types of weather while participating in the turn of the seasons.
Bower Tree is seeking an assistant teacher to begin during March to help care for a classroom of 7 children ages 2-5, plus one infant beginning in summer. After a training period, this position will start as a maternity leave assistant, working closely with the current assistant (who will be in the role of substitute lead) while the lead teacher is on leave but still present in the home, and then transition into a full assistant teacher role when the current assistant leaves in June. For a more experienced applicant, this position could grow into more of a co-teacher role.
The assistant will help with Montessori lessons, material making, nurturing and observing children indoors and outdoors, preparing meals and snacks, cleaning, and caring for school animals. We would like to find someone who is enthusiastic about helping the AMI-trained and Waldorf-trained lead teacher to offer lessons on botany, animals, literacy, numeracy, geography and more in a way that complements our nature-based environment, emphasis on experiential spirituality (interfaith and non-faith), and strong spoken language curriculum. Montessori primary training or experience in a Montessori classroom is preferred.

Requirements:
-Montessori primary training or at least one school year working in an early childhood classroom
-Openness to working in a hybrid Montessori/Waldorf environment
-Warm, loving disposition and reverence for the spirit of the child
-Basic cooking and baking skills
-A love of animals and plants
-Ability to bend and lift up to 50 pounds
-Fluency in English
-Oregon food handler's card and enrollment in the Oregon Central Background Registry (First Aid / CPR and other trainings may be completed after hire)
The ideal applicant will also bring additional skills such as singing, sewing, gardening, playing a musical instrument, sculpting, knitting, or other handwork.
