Position Overview

Marion Polk Food Share is the regional food bank serving Marion and Polk counties. Support from our local community makes it possible for the Food Share to collect and distribute nutritious food for children, adults, and seniors through more than 100 partner programs, including food pantries, meal sites and home-delivered meals and to carry out programs to address the root causes of hunger.

Statement of Purpose: The Volunteer Action Assistant plays an essential role in the efficient conversion of food through the Volunteer Action Center into the warehouse to allow for quick distribution to our partner agencies and community.

Summary of Role: Assists the Volunteer Action Supervisor in the conversion of unsorted and bulk foods into finished goods for hunger relief food distribution while also ensuring a positive volunteer experience. Assists in the training and engagement of volunteers in the Repack and Sorting areas and works alongside volunteers to encourage a team environment.

Welcomes, trains and coaches volunteers in the VAC/sorting area.

Sets up and assists in the repack process.

Cross-trains in all warehouse functions.

Maintains a clean and safe work environment.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities but will provide leadership, guidance and training to volunteers.

Areas of Responsibility, Evaluation and Essential Functions:

Welcomes, trains and coaches volunteers in the VAC/sorting area.

Ensures volunteers follow food safety standards by washing hands and dressing in appropriate clothing and food safety gear, such as gloves, aprons, and hair nets.

Trains volunteers on the tasks for the day and remains available for questions and to assist as needed.

Assists is supervising volunteers in the repack of frozen, dry, and fresh products.

Assists in resolving any volunteer concerns or brings concerns to the attention of the appropriate manager.

Maintains a courteous, fun, and professional work environment for volunteers, staff, partner agencies and community members.

Maintains proficiency with a computer-based inventory management system, works independently, and trains others on the system as needed.

Sets up and assists in the repack process.

Sets up for repacks with necessary supplies.

Works as part of a team to repack a variety of products for distribution to partner agencies.

Manages product flow in repack area according to first in, first out (FIFO) standards.

Sorts donated product into inventory categories.

Cross-trained in all warehouse functions.

Functions as a team player with all other Warehouse staff in order to step in and assist other positions when needed.

Cross-trains in other Warehouse Generalist positions (Cooler Assistant and Order Filler).

Assists in loading and unloading trucks for food distribution. Rides with drivers to assist with deliveries as needed.

Receives, sorts and places food products in warehouse while keeping goods free from damage and consistent with food safety best practices.

Maintains a Clean and Safe Work environment.

Assists in maintaining cleanliness of warehouse and repack area.

Promotes a safe work environment and informs Warehouse Manager of any accidents or incidents while on the job.

Demonstrates proper lifting techniques to mitigate injuries.

Safely operates warehouse equipment such as pallet jacks and pallet wrapping equipment.

Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience; Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:

· One year of experience working in a warehouse, production, or food processing environment preferred, not required.

· Prior experience with Warehouse Management System preferred, not required.

· Basic math, reading skills and basic computer skills including use of email and calendar.

· Skills in Microsoft Office/Office 365 a preferred, but not required.

· Ability to learn Warehouse Inventory System.

· Pallet jack and forklift certified or able to become certified within 60-days of hire.

· Must pass pre-employment drug screen (excluding THC) and full background check.

· Valid food handler's card preferred or ability to obtain one within 30-days.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

· Able to work with volunteers, staff, and community partners as part of a team.

· Good written and verbal communication skills with volunteers and staff. Must be able to communicate in person, by phone and in writing.

· Prior experience training individuals in performing tasks preferred, but not required.

· Able to work well under pressure, with frequent interruptions and shifting priorities and exercise sound judgement daily.

· Able to come to work on time, daily and work a flexible schedule for evening shifts, special events, including occasional weekends.

· Must support the Marion Polk Food Share mission and philosophy.

Job Conditions:

Work may be performed standing, kneeling, or bending for prolonged periods of time. Work may be performed outside or in a warehouse environment. Will frequently lift, move, and carry objects more than 50 pounds and push and pull loads up to 1500 pounds on carts and pallet jacks. Work is subject to varying indoor and outdoor temperatures and road and walkway surface in all seasons.

Remote work is NOT possible for this position.

The Food Share provides essential services to our neighbors in Marion and Polk counties. As a result, all Food Share employees may be asked to report to work during local public health, weather, or other environmental emergencies.PI178270483 Apply
