DescriptionPurpose:The Data Engineer at UPMC Enterprises Translational Science supports management in "acceleration". Data engineers use their background and experience to develop data pipelines and tools, manipulate and analyze health data to support scientific projects and inquiries into clinical populations, treatments, markets, and products. They apply their skills to support early-stage discoveries through machine learning pipelines and clinical analytics. They serve patients and the health system by leveraging data, developing software and performing analysis for discovery and insights to improve patient treatments.This role will receive mentorship and supervision not only from UPMCE Enterprises (UPMCE) but also from UPMC’s Chief Analytics Officer as a part of the Clinical Data Analytics (CDA) team. They will spend time as a part of the CDA team advancing the translational mission of UPMC, but their primary role will be to meet requirements and address requests of UPMCE Translational Science and its portfolio companies.Tactically, various clinical and administrative systems will be used as the data sources, including but not limited to Epic, Cerner and Medipac. This will also include working with components of the health care operating system (hcOS) at UPMCE. Final aggregation and presentation will be completed through various software packages, including SQL Developer, Qlik and Cognos. The Data Engineer must ensure reporting logic is accurate and sound by comparing analytical output to data within the source systems, as well as through cross validation to base reports under the direction of the CDA team. The Data Engineer must be able to work both independently as well as in a team setting.Responsibilities:

Perform clinical analyses in a team-oriented atmosphere and review the analytical outcomes to both clinical and non-clinical audiences

Identify trends in outcomes, utilization, medical quality and other areas.

Develop software, configure dashboards and extract data under the direction of UPMCE and the CDA.

Meet deadlines and turnaround times set by management (these deadlines and turnaround times will, at times, require the employee to work until the project is completed, meaning extended daily work hours, extended work weeks, or both).

Effectively prioritize and complete all assigned tasks.

Develop and maintain working relationships with internal UPMC departments, and external contacts as appropriate.

Stay abreast on new solutions relevant to UPMCE and the CDA through various webinars and intermittent conferences requiring brief travel

Master new computer software programs and upgrades, as applicable. Maintain high level of accuracy and timeliness.

Understand data sources available through hcOS, including Health Catalyst, to ensure scalable, portable data access where applicable

Assist in organizing and leading discussions with multi-disciplinary teams, including but not limited to: senior management, clinical leaders, external stakeholders, etc. I

Identify current /future data challenges, develop meaningful recommendations, implement in the form of new software development and configuration, and provide timely updates on issues encountered.

Exhibit advanced problem solving using various information sources.

Maintains patient confidentiality, adheres strictly to data governance policies, and ensures data accuracy.

Standard Responsibilities: Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors. Performs other duties as assigned.

QualificationsBachelor's Degree in Computer Science or healthcare related field and 7+ years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Master's Degree preferred. Must have knowledge of regulatory requirements, and healthcare domain experience. Relational data base design and development. SQL programming fundamentals. Knowledge of Health Care Finance and Operations is desirable. Prior expertise with EPIC, CERNER, Imaging or healthcare financial data.Prior Informatics work a plus. North America Regulatory Reporting experience SQL understanding or knowledge to facilitate data analysis Understanding to User Acceptance testing and building of testing strategy/test plans.
