Pipe Layer – PL0824 Sanders Brother Construction is currently seeking a Pipe layer to support our water, sewer and storm drain projects throughout the Charleston, SC area. Role and Responsibilities
The Pipe layer - Utilities Laborer III will be responsible for supporting Utilities crews during the installation of underground water, sewer and drainage pipeline.
Follow directions of the utility foreman and utility equipment operators.
Working within confined spaces (after required training) at varying depths.
Assisting with the installation of trench boxes.
Assisting utilities brick mason as needed
Assist with the placement of ductile, concrete and steel piping.
Assist during utility pipe repairs.
Work in varying weather conditions and work environments including dusty, wet, loud noises, etc.
Keep company vehicle, tools and equipment clean and orderly, informing management of any safety concerns.
Comply with all SBCC policies, procedures and safety requirements.
Perform any other general duties as specified.
Quality Control – Ensure pipes are clean and meet required level of quality prior to installation.
Responsible for final quality of bedding and grade n trench.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
1-3 years’ experience assisting in utility installation
High school diploma/GED preferred.
Ability to recognize and identify poor quality products prior to installation.
Knowledge of pipe backfill and bedding standards.
Ability to recognize and ensure that a pipe is belled up properly and seated, lubricated and homed properly.
Must be able to accurately read grades.
Ability to recognize and communicate poor subgrade condition to ensure proper bedding.
Ability to read the laser targets.
Must be able to set grade rods to grade.
Must understand grade and ability to accurately grade the bottom of the trench to proper elevation for pipe installation or direct equipment operator to meet required grade specifications.
Must have basic mathematic skills to properly measure pipe “make up” for distance.
Based on duties, may be required to obtain DOT medical certification.
Must obtain a negative drug test result prior to hire and maintain throughout term of employment.
Must meet SBCC's employment standards with regards to background checks.
Must have the ability to stand, sit, kneel, squat, push, pull, and climb for up to 10 hours
Work environments will vary making it necessary to tolerate weather conditions, such as rain and extreme temperatures. Employees may be exposed to dust, dirt, varying temperatures, loud noises, etc.
Ability to regularly lift 50 pounds.
Must have Ability to work overtime, weekends and nights as needed.
Must meet SBCC's standards with regards to the ability to pass required safety training.
