The successful candidate for this position will have the opportunity to join UTA during an exciting period of growth and contribute as the university broadens its impact.Job Summary Reporting to the Vice President, this role will oversee several important compliance functions as well as serving researchers in their safe and secure research computing, data sharing and storage activities. The Research Security Manager works with faculty, staff, and students across the campus to support security systems and safeguards to protect research data and intellectual property. This position will be responsible for supporting University departments and researchers ensuring regulatory compliance on projects with contractual obligations to provide a secure computing environment as well as help ensure safeguards to foreign influence.Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Oversee the University’s program for controlled classified information ( CUI ) and compliance with cybersecurity/IT requirements of NIST SP 800-171 (In coordination with OIT ).

Maintain University’s DD 2345 registration through JCP .

Implement and maintain compliance requirements for NSPM -33, and State of Texas Requirements for research security – serving as the University’s Research Security Officer.

Identify and monitor high-risk international research collaborations and engagements.

Develop policies and procedures and deliver training materials to implement research security, insider threat, and related compliance requirements.

Ensure compliance with information security requirements specified in research contracts/agreements.

Development and monitoring of Research Security Plans (RSPs) for projects involving sensitive technologies.

Perform Screenings and risk assessments for various foreign engagements involving – faculty travel for research presentations and collaborations, visiting scholars, controlled technologies, lab security for sensitive or controlled technologies, foreign funding or foreign collaborations.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field with five (5) years of relevant experience or equivalent work experience in lieu of education or equivalent relevant experience.

Ability to effectively collaborate with faculty and staff in units that vary greatly in size and organizational structure.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in an appropriate area and three years of relevant experience with five (5) years of direct experience of dealing with foreign influence in a university setting.

Significant experience managing research security or compliance programs within an R1 academic institution.

Experience in program development and management, and research-related administration.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Vast knowledge of compliance principles and regulatory requirements that impact the research endeavors of higher education.

Solid organizational skills, attention to detail and dependability are essential.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
