Physician Director

This position is contingent upon award:The Physician Director is the senior clinical leader of a VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic serving enrolled Veterans. This role combines direct patient care with medical leadership to ensure safe, high-quality, equitable, and Veteran-centered services aligned to the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) model, VA directives, and evidence-based practice. The Physician Director oversees the provider team, partners with nursing/administration on operations and access, drives quality and safety initiatives, ensures regulatory and accreditation readiness, and represents the clinic in market-level clinical governance.Direct supervision of employed/contracted providers (MD/DO, NP/PA); dotted-line leadership for clinical support staff in partnership with nursing leadership.Accountability for provider schedules, panel management, clinical productivity expectations consistent with VA policy, and adherence to quality/safety standards.May serve as Acting Clinic Director during absences, as assigned.Serve as physician-in-charge for the CBOC; model patient-centered, team-based care across primary care, behavioral health, and ancillary services.Lead PACT implementation and reliability (huddles, panel management, same-day access, care coordination, clinical reminders).Chair or participate in clinic quality and peer review activities; ensure OPPE/FPPE, provider competencies, and privileging requirements are met.Develop, implement, and monitor clinical policies, standing orders, and evidence-based care pathways consistent with VA directives.Partner with nursing leadership and practice administration on access, throughput, scheduling rules, and resource allocation.Provide comprehensive primary care within scope (history/physical, diagnosis, treatment plans, chronic disease management, procedures consistent with privileges).Use virtual modalities (video/telephone) and population health tools to close care gaps and support proactive Veteran outreach.Ensure accurate, timely documentation, order entry, and coding in the VA EHR (e.g., CPRS/Cerner) and ancillary systems.Own the clinic’s Quality Management plan: define aims, select measures, review dashboards, and run PDSA cycles for access, quality, and safety.Ensure adherence to infection prevention, medication management, test tracking/diagnostic follow-up, and safe handoff practices.Lead morbidity & mortality reviews and root cause analyses as indicated; ensure timely reporting and closure of safety events.Maintain survey readiness (e.g., Joint Commission), VA Environment of Care standards, and compliance with HIPAA/Privacy and OSHA requirements.Recruit, onboard, schedule, and evaluate providers (MD/DO, NP/PA); support precepting and mentoring.Conduct regular provider meetings and interdisciplinary case reviews; foster a just culture and high-reliability mindset.Provide coaching and performance improvement plans when needed; promote CME, board maintenance, and professional growth.Set and monitor access targets (third-next-available appointment, same-day access, consult turnaround); implement recovery plans.Optimize clinic templates, room utilization, and team workflows to reduce cycle time and improve continuity.Champion Veteran experience, whole health, trauma-informed care, and service recovery; analyze SHEP/CX feedback and execute action plans.Collaborate on budgeting, staffing models, and supply stewardship; ensure diagnostic and emergency equipment readiness.Coordinate with community care partners and VA specialists to ensure timely consults, transitions of care, and closed-loop communication.Represent the clinic in market or VISN committees and quality collaboratives as assigned.Completes required organizational compliance education, including assigned requirements that are client-specified, for Joint Commission Healthcare Staffing Services certification or other regulatory bodies.This list is non-exhaustive, and the role holder may be required to undertake additional duties
