The mission of the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research, and prevention and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees, and the public.The Core Director/Research Group Leader of the Mass Spectrometry Imaging Facility will direct core operations to provide services, technology development, oversight, direction, and collaborations, and will work closely with the Scientific Director of the core. The Core Director/Research Group Leader will ensure that this core facility enables breakthrough research to all MD Anderson and external users. The Core Director/Research Group Leader will discuss experimental design, guide suitable data analysis procedures, and assist with data interpretation to ensure high quality and reliable output derived from the Core technology. In addition to technically guiding core activities, the Core Director will work closely with the Scientific Director(s) to ensure that the core continues to innovate, adopt new technologies and analytical methods, and bring on new services to potentiate the research mission.Key functionsRESEARCH ACTIVITIES· Interact with faculty members and their laboratory personnel to devise appropriate experimental strategies for data collection and computational analysis· Consult with faculty on data quality and suggest strategies for improved sample quality· Direct collaborative projects that require a high level of technical expertise or the application of new approaches· Attend conferences, follow research literature, and discuss and establish new approaches with faculty· Remain up to date with current state-of-the-art techniques for the field and continuously update data analysis methods· Train and supervise facility staff members to maintain capabilities at the forefront of technological developments· Assist with manuscript and grant preparation for collaborative research· Maintain a safe, clean, and functional laboratoryADMINISTRATIVE ACTIVITIES· Oversee the installation, maintenance, and operation of current and future instrumentation and equipment· Participate in choosing and purchasing equipment, and in the development of new facilities· Budget planning for service and maintenance, equipment modifications and improvements, and personnel· Hire and manage a focused team of scientists and staff to aid in facility operations· Responsible for decisions on hiring, promotions, salary changes, performance evaluations, and terminations of a focused team of scientists to aid in facility operations· Responsible for presentation of the Mass Spectrometry Imaging Facility to site visitors· Establish scheduling policies for instrument access and workflows for equipment operation and usage· Maintain accurate logs of equipment usage and performance· Liaise with faculty advisory committee to ensure alignment with institutional needsEDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES· Supervise equipment usage performed by principle investigators, researchers, post-docs, and graduate students· Develop and implement educational and training programs for PIs and their staff· Ensure facility users employ proper safety protocolsOTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNEDEducationRequired: PhD in one of the natural sciences or related field, or medical degree.Preferred: Ph.D. in biochemistry, physical chemistry, structural biology, computer science, engineering, or related field, with postdoctoral experienceE xpe ri e nc eRequired: Seven years experience of relevant research experience in laboratory to include three years of managerial experience. Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience. Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.Preferred: At least 5 years as Assistant Professor (NTRA) or staff scientist. Technical expertise in mass spectrometry maintenance. Proficiency in operating various mass spectrometry systems and data analysis software.
