Stadium Dr. 6th floor, Houston TX 77054Workdays & Hours: M-F, 7 a.m.- 4 p.m.Subject to changeDESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe Houston Health Department has an exciting opportunity for a Dental Hygienist to p erform skilled clinical dental hygienist procedures, educates patients and the community in proper oral hygiene practices and supervises the Dental Assistants and clerical staff in a dental clinic. RESPONSIBILITES: Supervises section, schedules and reviews work, trains and evaluates employees. Educates patients in the development and maintenance of preventive dental health practices. Provides oral prophylactic treatment, including teeth cleaning, polishing and applying fluoride. Applies sealants or medications to surface tissues. Performs routine administrative duties, including budget management, supply requisition and vendor reimbursement, patient billing and equipment repair and maintenance. Performs skilled chairside dental procedures as directed by dentist. Assists in recruitment, selection and training of new employees. Organizes and participates in community outreach programs, health fairs and other dental health programs. May be required to work at more than one clinic location. WORKING CONDITIONSThe position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTSRequires specialized training in dental hygiene principles, procedures, practices, routines or techniques, which might normally be acquired through a technical specialty program of over 18 months and up to three years in duration. Some competence in the operation of dental equipment or electronic equipment may be required. A general knowledge of bookkeeping and dental equipment maintenance is required. Must be qualified to place dental sealants. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSOne year of experience in chairside clinical dental hygiene within the past three years is required. LICENSE REQUIREMENTSMust have a valid license to practice dental hygiene in the State of Texas and a current annual registration certificate from the State of Texas. PREFERENCESPreference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
