POSITION OVERVIEWApplications Accepted From: ALL PERSONS INTERESTEDDepartment: Houston Health Division: Environmental HealthSection: Pollution Control & PreventionWorkdays & Hours: Monday – Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Subject to ChangeDESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSIncumbents in this position will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:Investigate complaints concerning pollution and contamination through on-site inspections with monitors, samplers, and other screening equipment.
Conduct enforcement by issuing citations and violation notices to violators and testify as an expert witness during court proceedings.
Investigate minimum property standards and health code issues at multi-family habitability facilities.
Prepare surveys, investigation, and observation reports for utilization in corrective recommendations or as legal evidence in the prosecution of violators.
Maintain and operate scientific instruments.
Communicate and coordinate with owners and property managers to track corrective actions at apartments.
Participate in educational public outreach events
Perform other duties as directed or assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONSThis position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. There are occasional exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTSRequires a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Health Engineering or a closely related degree.EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSOne (1) year of experience in pollution/environmental control is required.PREFERENCESPreference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.GENERAL INFORMATIONSELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED NoneHowever, the department may administer a skills assessment evaluation.SAFETY IMPACT POSITION Yes If yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.SALARY INFORMATION General Fund Grants and Special funded positions are dependent upon continued available funds.
