This position requires the individual to interface directly with patients and family members and respond to their needs according to program agendas, appointment scheduling, patient care assignments, and available resources.Medical Assistant opportunity in the Leukemia Center department. The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of Medical Assistant experience.Shift: Days 7:00 am - 5 pmJOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIESDirect Patient Care: Room patients in preparation for treatment/service which includes taking and documenting vital signs and allergy information as well as any other assigned information into the Electronic Health Record. Provides transportation of patients for transfer to other areas in the hospital. Must position, lift, and move patients as needed. Processes all required paperwork. Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of patient information. Updates relevant patient information in order to maintain an accurate patient medical record. Assists in ensuring a safe environment for patients. Provides support and assistance to all members of the healthcare team as needed and assigned.Patient Care Coordination: Greets, screens, and routes patients/visitors and telephone callers in a friendly, cordial manner to the Leukemia Center and institution using telephone, keyboard, information systems, and strong interpersonal skills with specific emphasis on customer service. Listens to the needs of patients and offers resources as appropriate. Keeps track of program agendas and offers and informs patients/visitors of appropriate services available to them. Assists participants in the registration process ensuring completion of required paperwork, including physician orders and eligibility requirements as appropriate. Responsible for general room set up at start of day as well as facilitating or completing room clean up between patients. Processes request and coordinates patient/program scheduling using strong verbal, listening and written communication skills. Access participant database to review registration and completion. Assists patients in completing visit information as needed. Maintains databases and generates routine and as-requested reports from databases using computation and formatting skills. Maintains participant/patient related files and documentation. Ability to handle multiple tasks in rapid succession and effectively respond to a variety of individulals and situations. Schedules patient visits, physician appointments, diagnostic tests, procedures, and treatment in the CARE system as well as other center scheduling systems. Communicates pertinent information regarding appointments, scheduling, prepayment, and financial counseling to patients, families, physicians, team members, and other patient care areas. May assist with obtaining insurance clearance as needed. Handles and processes a complex and varied set of documents and situations. Interprets and coordinates physician orders. Prepares and maintains appointment templates and/or patient records. Retrieves pre-printed forms from various institutional databases and submits completed forms to HIMS for scanning. Reviews and reconciles patient charge documents and collects payments in accordance with established departmental processed and guidelines.Fiscal Responsibilities: Participates in daily charge capture/reconciliation process with roles changing dependent on staffing ratios. Reviews and reconciles patient charge documents and collects payments in accordance with established departmental processes and guidelines with daily iPayment process including cash bank buy, receipt of participant funds, daily balance verification, and monthly transaction reconciliation. May also be in the role of cash collections.   • At Houston Methodist, the Senior Medical Assistant Certified (Sr. MA) position is responsible for functioning as an expert and demonstrates highly competent knowledge in the more technical and advances examinations and treatments necessary to communicate appropriately and carry out delegated medical assistant level tasks under the direct supervision of a Physician and/or Registered Nurse for assigned patient populations, for providing high quality support of patient care and services.   • At Houston Methodist, the Courier position is responsible for the transportation of medications, laboratory specimens, medical records, patient belongings, and other misc. This position is also responsible for accurately sorting, organizing, and transporting specimens and medications between various pharmacy/laboratory locations, nursing units, and physician offices. The Courier position performs deliveries accurately and efficiently within the allotted time standards and ensures deliveries are made throughout the Houston Methodist complex on a 24-hour basis.
