Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas , the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.SummaryThe primary purpose of the Nurse Manager position is to assist in overall clinical operations, staff management and the coordination of patient care and customer services. The Nurse Manager affects the patient care and daily operations of assigned patient care area.Key Functions

Transformational Leadership : Nurse Managers must lead and develop others (co-workers, patients, families, significant others) to where they need to be in order to meet the demands of their future needs.

Implements and monitors unit budget to respond in a cost effective manner to changing patient, staff and multidisciplinary team requirements and strengthen unit.

Assists in preparation and delivery of unit staffing plans considering skill mix, staff and patient care requirements. Analyzes plans for compliance with established budget.

Assures continuity of care as patients' transition across the continuum through appropriate discharge planning, patient education and coordination of services.

Practice with autonomy within the scope of professional nursing

Structural Empowerment: Nurse Manager empowers staff to problem solve in order to meet organizational and unit goals and achieve desired outcomes.

o Helps manage human resource activities for all clinical and clerical staff including recruitment, retention, supervision, evaluation and productivity.o Participates in identifying, recruiting, developing and retaining top talent through effective communication, performance management, career counseling, and conflict resolution.o Participates as active member in shared governance model at unit and institutional level.o Accountable for identifying barriers to patient care and solutions.o Active in developing strong relationships and partnerships within and across the organization to improve patient outcomes.

Exemplary Professional Practice : Nurse Manager has a comprehensive understanding of the role of professional nursing in the institution and motivates staff to perform at the highest level.

Trains, coaches and assists team members to ensure optimum patient care and efficient use of resources.

Accountable for the management and provision of patient care in assigned area.

Effectively and consistently functions in related roles as required; i.e. charge nurse, clinical coach, preceptor, protocol manager.

Demonstrates clinical competency and compassion in providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures and managing emergencies.

Assesses patient's needs for nursing care and other services.

Collaborates with physicians, other services, patient and patient's family to plan care and evaluate outcomes.

New Knowledge, Innovation, and Improvements : Nurse Manager encourages and supports the integration of innovation and research-based findings into daily patient care practices.

Actively participates in, assists and / or leads unit, divisional and/or institutional improvement projects. Communicates information to appropriate individuals.

Promotes innovative solutions by encouraging innovation in others.

Improves practice by integrating results and theories of research studies.

Participates in /leads evidenced based practice projects.

Participates in the redesign of care delivery for unit/center patient population.

Empirical Quality Results: Nurse Manager promotes employees to seek solutions to problems inherent in our institution rather than creating work arounds.

Assumes leadership role in managing the quality of services provided at the unit level, across the care delivery continuum and within the larger organization.

Ensures integration of safety and quality standards into practice and delivery of team care.

Recognizes and takes action to prevent at risk behavior i.e., non-adherence to policy, standards of care, practice.

Collaborates with others in quality and performance improvement efforts.

EDUCATIONRequired: Bachelor's degree in Nursing.Preferred: Master's degree in Nursing or health related field.EXPERIENCERequired: Five years of professional nursing experience, to include one year of supervisory experience in direct patient care activities.Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate program may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience.Preferred: One year of experience in cancer care. Two years or more of experience in an Assistant Nurse Manager or Nurse Manager role.LICENSURE / CERTIFICATIONRequired:Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN).Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.Preferred:Certification in Oncology or specialty practice area.
