Senior Animal Attendant - Veterinary Medicine & Surgery (South Campus)

The Veterinary Medicine and Surgery department exists to serve MD Anderson research programs. Our primary mission is to provide the best possible veterinary care, facilities and services in support of the institutional animal care and use program, in keeping with all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) accreditation standards. The department's capabilities are broad based and flexible to accommodate a variety of research interests while remaining in compliance with required standards. The basis of our program is centered on the well being of all animals, the best interests of our researchers, and the best interest of MD Anderson and its animal care and use program.KEY FUNCTIONSRoutine Husbandry Animal Care & Documentation

Provides assigned animal with clean cage, feed, and water according to standard operating procedures. Performs daily animal care and health flagging for assigned area.

Ensures the ventilated cage rack system and automated drinking water system are operating correctly and reports alarms, abnormal room conditions, or malfunctions to team leader or supervisor immediately. Records data in the appropriate hardcopy or electronic system.

Ensures that data is entered in a timely manner.

Records the completion of assigned tasks using the electronic task management system.

Ensures that the correct animal identification is placed on animals.

Reports any discrepancies to the supervisor. Completes all written documentation in clear and legible writing.

Routine Cage Wash

Performs equipment washing, sanitizing, sterilization, and quality assurance testing according to standard operating procedure.

Properly disassembles equipment prior to, and reassembles following, sanitation.

Ensures that cage washing equipment is working properly and reports alarms and malfunctions to team leader or supervisor immediately.

Performs flushes on recoil hoses and automated water system manifolds on racks using the chlorine flush stations. Maintains proper chlorine levels of flush stations.

Facility & Room Care

Ensures cleanliness and sanitation of animal housing/cage wash and ancillary areas.

Ensures equipment is cleaned, made available for sanitization, etc., on the established schedule.

Cleans filters and debris strainer trays daily.

Inspects and cleans sprayer jets on tunnel and rack washers daily.

Performs an acid descale cycle weekly.

Ensures supplies are adequately stocked, transports and pick up equipment at designated areas, and reports problems to team leader or supervisor.

Other duties as assigned.

EducationRequired: High school diploma or equivalent.Preferred: Associate's or Bachelor's degree.ExperienceRequired: One year of animal care experience in an animal hospital/clinic, research facility or related field.
