Laboratory Assistant (On-call Night shift in San Marcos, CA)

Job Summary:Receives patients, checks test requisitions, maintains laboratory records, and performs data entry on the laboratory management system and receives/distributes lab specimens.Essential Responsibilities:

Upholds Kaiser Permanentes Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws.

Receives laboratory patients and checks test requisitions to ensure completeness and accuracy.

Obtains clearance for non-paying coverages following standard procedures.

Makes appropriate labels for tubes to be used in drawing blood.

Gives instructions to patients and provides necessary items such as urine containers, assists staff with difficult to manage patients.

Guides, directs, and takes patients to proper area.

Verifies members co-pay amounts.

Collects payments, at beginning of shift and end of shift, balances and signs for cash drawer (money on hand), provides members with receipts of co-pays, deposit balanced cash drawers at end of shift per cash handling policy.

Receives telephone calls and provides information regarding laboratory operations. Makes patient appointments according to prescribed procedures for special tests. Maintains departmental records to include daily census counts, completed laboratory procedures and record of specimens sent to outside laboratories.

Separates laboratory requisition copies and routes to doctor, chart room, billing office of other location following standard procedures.

Transcribes laboratory reports on laboratory slips, posts reports on inpatient charts as required, following standard procedures.

Assists laboratory technologist with routine tests including pouring, numbering, centrifuging, and routine culturing.

Receives courier baskets and distributes laboratory samples as requested.

Fills courier baskets for outlying clinics with laboratory supplies for delivery.

Assists in specimen tracking.

Receives laboratory specimens such as blood, urine, stool, tissue, semen, spinal fluid, and sputum and other body fluids including GYN and non-GYN cytology and cultures from different sources.

Give laboratory results to physicians, chart room and others as appropriate.

Enter physician comments in computer as needed.

Pick up and transport specimens for testing from other laboratory locations.

Establishes and maintains courteous, cooperative relations with the public, patients, and other personnel.

Performs data entry and queries on a computer terminal for the laboratory management system (LMS) and Kaiser Permanente Data System (KPDS) and computerized appointment system (OPAS).

Performs related duties as required, including cleaning and stocking cards, inventorying and requesting lab and pathology supplies under prescribed procedures, storing supplies, mail slips to proper area and other duties as assigned.

Promotes, ensures, and improves customer service to internal/external customers by demonstrating skills which are consistent with the organizations philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations and quality service.

Assume other activities and responsibilities from time to time as directed.

Basic Qualifications:Experience

One-year experience as a Medical Assistant or 6 months experience working in a hospital or outpatient lab or equivalent military experience required.

Typing 25 wpm.

Testing must be completed by the end of the posting period.
