Purpose: To manage the Cheese department to meet goals for sales, margin, inventory, turns and customer service.

Standards:

-Supervisory Responsibilities-

•Supervises clerks to ensure appropriate support for them in doing their

•Participate in Management Team responsibilities as designated, such as policy development and other team coverage as needed

•Attends Management Team monthly meetings

•Hire qualified applicants following established policy

•Ensure on-the-job training using expectation lists, training checklists; updates checklists as appropriate

•Conduct performance evaluations on a timely basis

•Take disciplinary action as needed following established policy

•Ensure department is scheduled within budgeted hours

•Review and approve time sheets on a timely basis

•Organize and facilitate department meetings to create goals and action plans to address opportunities

•Keep staff informed of storewide development, news, meetings and policy changes

•Organize and maintain departmental communication system that encourages staff participation

-Purchasing-

•Negotiate with suppliers for favorable prices, terms, quality, and delivery

•Assure compliance with all purchasing contracts

•Research new products, rotate varieties seasonally

•Research new or alternative sources of supply

•Adhere to all product merchandising policies and notify vendors of policies when purchasing new products

•Ensures that UPCs, PLUs and pricing information is accurate from suppliers

•Ensures that all new items are added to the POS before they are put out on retail floor for sale

•Maintain level of high quality products; maintain a sufficient amount of inventory, with limited out-of-stock items to maximize sales and turnover

-Merchandising-

•Attends monthly merchandising meetings to plan promotions and storewide merchandising with all other retail department managers, store manager and marketing manager

•Coordinate all promotional programs as associated with the Cheese dept: in-store flyer, radio ads, and other promotions

•Plan seasonal displays and maintain standards for all displays, cross merchandising when applicable

•Ensure adequate product levels for displays, sale items, coolers and regular stocked items

•Ensure shelf tags and signage are correct and on shelves and displays

•Ensures accurate, up-to-date price and date labeling of items

•Review movement reports to analyze overall category management, recommend and make set changes as needed

-Customer Service-

•Assist customers with product questions in prompt, courteous manner.

•Knowledgeable about all cheese and related Takes time to answer questions accurately.

•Ensures all Cheese staff receives necessary Orientation Passport

-Department Operations-

•Oversee department to minimize out-of-stocks and overstocks and to maximize sales and turnover

•Ensure proper receiving by department staff according to established procedures

•Review invoices for pricing and discount accuracy

•Ensure accurate coding and up-to-date signage

•Set pricing to meet margin goals; mark-down items as needed to reduce losses

•Coordinate regular price comparisons of identified competitors to maintain competitive prices

•Coordinate quarterly inventory counts with support from Store Manager

•Ensure proper credit is received from suppliers/distributors where applicable for returned or low quality products

•Set sales, margin and labor goals for Cheese dept with input from Store Manager

•Review financial reports of department performance, take corrective action as needed to meet goals

-Department Teamwork-

•Ensures department teamwork through trust and

•Prepares for and participates in periodic meetings

-Safety-

•Establishes policies and procedures to ensure safety compliance and adherence

•Ensures that all department staff receive appropriate safety training

-Scanning-

•Maintain accurate up-to-date costs of items in POS

-Department Maintenance-

•Ensure that shelves, displays, cooler, aisles and storage areas are inclean, orderly

•Ensure maintenance of department equipment in working Advise Store Manager of equipment repair or replacement needs.

•Maintain a department cleaning schedule and ensure that it is followed

•Coordinate storage of unsellable items to be returned to suppliers or are disposed of properly
