Applied Historian - Research and Reference (Arlington, VA)Job Title: Applied Historian - Research and Reference Location: Arlington, VA Job Summary/Purpose: The Gemini 3 Group (G3G) is seeking a full-time Applied Historian - Research and Reference to provide timely historical support to a valued Department of Defense (DoD) customer. Identify and organize source documents for research requests and information/background papers.
Maintain a historical collection of documents and books.
Provide research and reference services within the Customer’s Historical Research Collection and Historical Reference Library. Such services shall include research into unit and organization history.
Collect and analyze primary and secondary sources for the purpose of writing information and background papers.
Conduct research and write special studies on topics, as requested. Such special studies are longer and more in-depth studies than information and background papers. They may be published in print and require the highest level of scholarship, analysis, and writing style.
Provide the following support to the oral history program:
Plan interviews with present and past senior leadership officials by assisting the other historians in determining which officials need to be interviewed and in contacting them to schedule interview sessions.
Prepare for interviews by researching primary and secondary sources to develop appropriate questions.
Conduct interviews alone or in conjunction with others.
Format edit, and revise transcripts.
Required Experience:
At least two (2) years of full-time work experience in an archive or library.
Experience identifying, interpreting, and referencing information resources to answer specific research questions in writing as evidenced by completion of a thesis, dissertation, or research article.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Thorough understanding of organization, archive, and library operations.
Knowledge of and experience in using the most recent edition of theChicago Manual of Style.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks at one time.
Must be detail oriented and highly organized.
Effective prooing and quality assurance capabilities to include excellent spelling and grammar.
Familiarity with research databases and demonstrated ability to conduct research in community, state, and national archival collections.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
