The position location is our Chantilly, VA office. Travel to the Pentagon, Columbus OH, and/or other Customer locations may be necessary based on program or customer needs. This position reports to the Division Manager, Cyber Trust and Assurance Division (CTA).A Senior Network Security Researcher at Battelle is an expert in the infrastructure and operation of transmission of data across the Internet and local networks. Network Security Researchers are experts in the OSI model and have knowledge of encryption. This job is right if you have a passion for understanding how machines talk to one another through packet inspection. Technical Leadership: Lead the development and implementation of innovative cybersecurity strategies and solutions. Research and analyze emerging trends in networking technology, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
Documentation and Strategy Development: Develop comprehensive program plans, strategies, and congressional documents. Provide expertise in translating technical concepts into clear and concise documentation for various stakeholders.
Research and Innovation: Research techniques used by Advanced Persistent Threats (APT) and contribute to the development of detection approaches. Investigate and analyze the potential impact of emerging technologies on customer networks.
Communication and Collaboration: Collaborate with technical teams to provide human context and non-technical perspectives to technical solutions. Communicate complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
Relationship Building: Foster strong, trusted relationships with customers through technical briefings and on-project success.
Key Qualifications
Active Top Secret Clearance; must be SCI eligible.
Must be sole US Citizen.
BS in Computer Science or a related field, and (8) years of relevant experience; MS in Computer Science or related field, and (5) years of relevant experience; PhD in Computer Science or related field, and (2) years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education/experience in a relevant field.
Familiarity with IP networking concepts such as Quality of Service (Ethernet Class of Service, IP Differentiated Services Code Pointes, etc.), multi-protocol label switching (MPLS), and IP security virtual private networks (IPSEC VPN).
Adequate familiarity with standards and standards bodies (IEEE, IETF, ISO, ITU-T).
Ability to communicate technical concepts to customers, program management and teammates.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with any behavioral models (MITRE ATT&CK, Lockheed Martin “Cyber Kill Chain”, etc) for advanced persistent threats (APT).
Graduate degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience.
Experience applying machine learning techniques to network packet capture (PCAP) data
Hands on experience with packet capture (tcpdump, WireShark) and network intrusion detection (Snort, Suricata, Zeek, etc.) tools.
Familiarity with the concepts of analog to digital conversion (quantization, sampling, etc) and perceptual encoding in the context of Voice over IP applications.
Familiarity with Python.
