Job AnnouncementThis is a part-time merit-based position 30 hours/week with benefits. This position has the opportunity to promote adapted sports for athletes with a variety of disabilities through Paralympic teams like the Fairfax Falcons Wheelchair Basketball and the NOVA Patriots Power Soccer team in Fairfax County. NCS Center Leader positions are ideal for individuals looking for part-time opportunities where they can engage in the community around them and make an impact in the lives of Fairfax County residents. Under the direction of the Therapeutic Recreation Management and in collaboration with the Community Center Management, the Adapted Sports Leader assists in the operation and development of adapted sports teams/programs operated in community centers. Assists with the implementation and delivery of community-based adapted sports programs and services; and provides on-site supervision of non-merit/temporary personnel. Supports the stewardship of the “One Fairfax Racial and Social Equity Policy” goals by assisting with the provision of services addressing health and human service needs of residents and/or underserved communities through the coordination of adapted sports. Serves in a supervision role for staff and volunteers as needed and assists in the preparation and wrap up of programs, monitors the care and maintenance of equipment and facilities of the center, and completes necessary administrative duties in support of program operations. Collects program data required for reporting; ensures a safe environment for participants; provides support to adaptive sports programs offered at community centers, and handles inquiries, makes referrals to appropriate resources, and coordinates with surrounding adapted sports communities to enhance programming and awareness. As customer service is a central role of this position, effective in-person and on the telephone communications skills with participants and coaches is essential. This position also assists with the registration of adaptive sports programs (i.e. Paralympic basketball and Power soccer programs). Ensures staff and participant compliance with operating procedures and safety/security standards. Also onboards volunteers through the Volunteer Management System. Connects participants to private and public resources and programs, delivers customer service by distributing literature and providing information, and assists as a liaison between county agencies, residents and other community centers. Assists management in the daily program delivery of several specialized programs and special events at assigned facilities, and assists management in the collection of data and records management necessary for the operation and evaluation of programs. Knowledge of the principles and practices of adapted sports management, including;

foundational knowledge of recreation therapy and adapted sports;

the ability to assist with the collection and tracking of program data and outcomes needed for program evaluation;

assistance in coordination of team schedule to include practices, tournaments, and games; coordination of space use and storage with community centers;

building relationships with community center staff;

communication with team coaches, athletes and parents; and

insurance of compliance with county protocols and practices.

Must have the ability to learn and navigate applicable software to include Therapeutic Recreation Activities Centralized Electronic Registration System (TRACERS) and the county’s Volunteer Management System (VMS), and peripheral equipment. Must have the ability to direct and coordinate the work of subordinate staff and volunteers, along with the ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, citizen groups, team members, coaches and the public. Additionally, must have the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

CPR/First Aid certification (required within 3 months of appointment)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background, a Child Protective Services Registry check, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.Additional Work Schedule Requirements: Nights and/or weekend hours are required. Based on need, can be deployed to various NCS facilities and/or communities to satisfy needs of the program.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Degree in recreation therapy, recreation, sociology, social work, public health, public administration or related field;

Prior experience with the following:

Community-based recreation programming;

Community and/or senior center operations and prevention-oriented programs for youth and older adults;

Community-based recreation programming for individuals with disabilities;

Supervising recreation employees;

Conducting outreach and programming to diverse cultures; outcome-based recreation programming;

Working with self-directed teams;

Managing multiple programs and projects;

Coordinating volunteer programs and services; and developing partnerships, sponsorships or collaborative programs and services with public and private agencies;

Working with video conferencing platforms (example: Zoom);

Working with scheduling/reservation systems (example: RecDynamics).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Position is active in nature. Must be able to monitor and observe the activities of program participants. Regularly moves about or positions self to supervise and interact with participants at their level. Occasionally lifts, transports, positions, push/pulls or moves up to 50 pounds. Must be sufficiently mobile and possess a range of motion to perform repetitive standing, walking, balancing, stooping, bending, crouching, crawling, sitting on the floor, reaching, squatting, kneeling, and twisting. Ability to react quickly to the physical actions of program participant. Administrative and supervisory activities will require ability to operate keyboard-driven equipment.
