Conducts inspections, complaint investigations and surveys of establishments that are determined to be of low risk to public health and safety to determine compliance with state and local codes and regulations related to water wells, swimming pools, tattoo shops, massage establishments, hotels and motels, campgrounds, summer camps, religiously exempt childcare facilities, and special events. Conducts surveillance of disease carrying insects and ticks. Participates in environmental program education and related community outreach activities. Documents inspections and investigation findings; records coded entries in designated database. Attends training courses, educational conferences and seminars to enhance job proficiency. Attends regular staff meetings as scheduled; performs other duties as assigned. Duties are performed under the supervision of an Administrative Assistant V, Environmental Health Supervisor or Environmental Health Specialist III.Watch these videos to learn more about Fairfax County:

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of guidelines related to temporary food establishment operations;

Knowledge of ordinances related to water recreation facilities;

Knowledge of health regulations for private water supplies and sewage handling and disposal;

Ability to prepare accurate and complete documentation required by regulatory agencies;

Ability to follow written and oral instructions;

Ability to work independently.

Employment StandardsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/hr/equivalencies-education-and-experience) (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to") graduation from high school or GED. issued by a state department of education, with coursework in chemistry or other physical or biological sciences; plus three years’ experience in environmental work, such as conducting regulatory inspections, processing chemicals and/or household hazardous waste, or acceptable laboratory experience. CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED: Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver’s license Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - CPR (Required within 60 days) AED (Required within 60 days) PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Health Department experience and knowledge of specific policies, guidelines, and procedures.

Experience in the field of Environmental Health and inspection programs.

Experience applying regulations, working knowledge of personal computers including laptops, word processing and database management programs.

Experience and knowledge of automated field inspection and/or surveillance equipment.

Strong oral and written communication and customer service skills; ability to work independently with minimal supervision; and the ability to exercise a high degree of independent decision making.

Ability to work in a team environment.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a child protective services registry, and sanction screenings to the satisfaction of the employer.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Ability to walk, negotiate/traverse sites with unleveled terrain and/or narrow passages; crouch, stoop, kneel, bend, reach, stretch, climb ladders, use test equipment, lift and carry instruments and other objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Wear personal protective equipment. Visual acuity is required to operate keyboard driven equipment and computer. Uses hands to grasp, handle or feel. Ability to conduct inspections/investigations in extreme temperature environments. Ability to operate motor vehicle in adverse weather conditions. Must be able to communicate with others verbally and in writing. Adequate color perception is necessary to identify chemical changes. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
