Department Summary:The Health and Society Innovation Center within MITRE Labs drives innovative solutions supporting the MITRE Public Sector organization and other mission partners primarily in support of our Federal sponsors. The Director is responsible for leading the creation of innovative solutions in the public interest, while cultivating world-class technical capabilities and workforce in advanced data analytics, health, public policy, social sciences and social services, and life sciences. The successful candidate for Director will have demonstrated expertise in one or more of these areas and is a proven innovative and entrepreneurial leader who has led multidisciplinary teams to improve outcomes for individuals, populations and the Nation. Strategic leadership, creativity, and the flexibility to work across evolving and diverse problem sets are a must.The foremost responsibility of the Director is to enable public delivery of healthcare benefits, services, value, quality and access and to understand how government impacts broader societal concerns through grant making, social and human services as well as economic, policy, communications and other societal influences. In order to accomplish this mission, the Director is responsible for the development of a remarkable diversity of professionals of technical, business, and clinical talent including but not limited to: health, health quality and clinical processes, data science, clinical informatics, health system administration & operations, public health, epidemiology, public health informatics, health IT, health systems prototyping, health standards and interoperability, AI as it relates to application in the societal concerns, healthcare industry and its systems, health communications, health macro and behavioral economics, social sciences, medical and clinical expertise, policy, law, and regulatory design and evaluation.The Innovation Center translates and integrates lessons learned across multiple application domains and sponsors to continually advance MITRE’s capabilities and impact. The Director will have a role in shaping corporate strategy for internal investments including internal research, capability development, and enterprise infrastructure to ensure MITRE is best positioned to deliver on its public service mission to its sponsors.The Health and Society Innovation Center encompasses approximately 300 employees in McLean, Virginia Bedford, Massachusetts, the Baltimore MD Site and several other sites across the United States that support a diverse work program across multiple sponsors and partners.Roles & Responsibilities:

Lead the direction of the Health and Society Innovation Center, creating a unified vision and strategy for the organization, and shaping the processes and capabilities required to best support the MITRE health and healthcare team.

Work collaboratively with the MITRE Center for Transforming Health and the MITRE FFRDCs involved in the health and healthcare ecosystem to proactively identify the major national challenges, policy and technology opportunities appropriate for health, policy, social and life sciences, simulation, experimentation & analytics enabled solutions.

Define, mature, and evolve MITRE’s research and technical capabilities and apply those in solving national scale challenges and problems in partnership with the MITRE FFRDCs involved in health and healthcare.

Effectively nurture and develop a workforce across a highly technical team made up of multi-disciplines which includes physicians and other clinicians such as nurses and pharmacists, public health, policy, lawyers, economists, interoperability, standards and other disciplines building an integrated team including recruiting and training world class talent to enable a growing work program.

Foster an environment of technical excellence, research currency, and impact.

Partner with leaders across MITRE’s business units to support strategic planning, work program shaping, and workforce planning.

Manage division operations and serving as direct supervisor to department heads and division staff.

Build dynamic partnerships with government partners, industry, and academia to advance the center’s capabilities, technical stature, and brand.

Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including government officials, partners, sponsors, academia, private sector healthcare actors, and media as necessary to promote the MITRE views and recommendations.

Local and overnight travel to geographically dispersed sponsor, stakeholder, and MITRE locations will be required.

Basic Qualifications:

Requires a minimum of 15 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 12 years and a Master’s degree; or a Ph.D. with 10 years’ experience; or an equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

5+ years of hands on and management experience and demonstrated leadership and national and/or international credibility in health, public policy, social sciences or services, life sciences, informatics, or closely related areas.

Demonstrated professional presence as shown by external technical stature, with a published record of research, development, scientific, and/or policy program impact.

Understanding of the complexity of major national challenges, policy and technology opportunities appropriate for health, public policy, social sciences and services, life sciences, and informatics.

Excellent leadership skills including persistent, tactful, and persuasive communications, influencing, conflict resolution, and building trust, and a history of successful team building and the management of a significant number of employees.

Demonstrated management acumen and skills, including financial planning, reporting, and analysis, recruiting, and human resources processes.

History of success developing new pilots, programs, and capability, including navigating government programmatic processes.

Demonstrated ability to leverage technical expertise to build and shape a portfolio of sponsor-funded programs through collaborative and effective organizational partnership.

Demonstrated expertise working with senior government leaders, as well as diverse commercial organizations from small start-ups to large established corporations.

Demonstrated comfort with significant ambiguity and change in a fast-paced environment, and the ability to prioritize across multiple competing demands and simultaneously handle diverse commitments to multiple stakeholders.

The ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance is required.

This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s Degree or Ph.D. and 20+ years of related experience.

Experience leading and building geographically dispersed organizations.

Experience working and leading within a highly matrixed organization.

Government service with one of MITRE’s relevant key sponsors.

Active Secret Clearance.
