DescriptionThe City Attorney's office is seeking a Support Technician to perform clerical duties. The Support Technician will be responsible for greeting visitors, answering and directing telephone inquiries and resolving issues presented by visitors and callers, processing mail, typing legal correspondence and documents, opening and closing files, assisting with file management (including entering data, maintaining and utilizing databases, and copying and scanning documents), delivering and picking up documents, maintaining and updating records, preparing reports, processing contracts, updating City Code books, receiving and processing payments, and generally providing assistance as needed. Work may include gathering information for administrative proceedings and/or regarding personal injury and property damage claims and preparing documents and reports related to the administrative proceedings and/or claims under attorney supervision.The City Attorney’s Office represents the City, the School Board, the Norfolk Employee’s Retirement System, and other boards and commissions in legal matters. The City Attorney’s Office defends its clients in all litigation, files suits on behalf of its clients, prepares sound legislation for consideration by City Council, provides impartial advice, prepares contracts, ordinances and provides other legal services as necessary.Department Hiring Salary Range: $40,688 - $46,791Essential FunctionsEssential functions include but are not limited to:

Performs financial duties by maintaining and entering contracts into log, tracking overdue contracts and logging deposits, matching checks with invoices, matching invoices to requisitions, processing payments, contacting vendors regarding invoices or credits, processing transactions and billings, verifying payments received, and recording account transactions.

Performs clerical duties by greeting visitors, scheduling appointments and meetings, coordinating travel arrangements, maintaining and retrieving files, distributing calendars and work schedules, maintaining and ordering office supplies, notifying other agencies of information, answering and directing phone calls and resolving issues, entering data into the computer, researching contracts and work orders, processing various plans, keeping various logs of information, preparing various reports, utilizing and maintaining databases, preparing correspondence and reports, picking up and delivering documents, typing legal correspondence and documents, researching documents as requested, processing incoming mail, processing paperwork, and completing paperwork.

Answers and directs telephone inquires, office databases and systems, conducts research as requested. Processes paperwork, maintains files, types documents and correspondence, compiles reports, sorts and distributes mail, and orders office supplies.

Performs courier/messenger services for the office. Assists with internal document management, including data entry and use of office equipment, including copiers and scanners.

Gathers, reviews, and coordinates information for administrative proceedings and/or personal injury and property damage claims. Prepares reports and related documents.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/ExperienceWork requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.One year of general office work experience. A bachelor's degree or above may substitute work experience (as approved by the department).Additional Information & RequirementsWorking Hours: Monday – Friday 8:30am – 5:00pm /40 hours per week

Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

Retirement

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
