About the Role:
This role provides support and companionship for two young adult women, a 22 year old with cerebral palsy and a 20 year old with autism, in a sponsored residential home license through the department of behavioral health and developmental services. The focus is on safety, routine, community participation, and respectful care, along with light housekeeping in shared areas. The position also includes medication administration, preparing or serving dinner, and assisting with nightly bathing.
Responsibilities:
Provide companionship through activities such as walking, swinging, playing ball, or visiting the park
Participate in community outings including SkyZone, stores, the beach, or the pool (swimming is not required)
Occasionally drive them to visit family in Virginia Beach or Chesapeake
Administer medications as trained and documented (will provide training)
Prepare dinner using ingredients provided by the employer or serve a takeout meal purchased by the employer
Assist with daily routines including meal prep, light laundry, and maintaining tidy shared spaces
Support with dressing and bathing at the end of each day
One young woman completes almost all of her own bath with minimal prompts
The other requires full assistance for bathing
Provide support during occasional bowel or bladder incontinence episodes for one of the young women the other remains fully continent
Help them stay calm and focused during transitions or sensory overload
Supervise hair appointments or light grooming routines hair braiding skills are helpful but not required (will pay extra if you can do feed in braids)
Work cooperatively with the primary caregiver to maintain consistent routines and a safe environment
Complete light housekeeping throughout the day especially during quiet times such as vacuuming area rugs, sweeping and mopping the kitchen floor, vacuuming the stairs, and cleaning the downstairs half bath (not all in one day of course unless that is what you choose)
After the final bath every evening clean the shower and take out small trash cans from the upstairs bathroom, downstairs bathroom, office, and kitchen
Qualifications:
Preferred but not required
Experience supporting people with autism, cerebral palsy, or developmental disabilities
CPR and First Aid certification/Medication Administration (training available)
TOVA or CPI certification training available
Required
Must live in or near Hampton Virginia
Valid driver license, reliable vehicle, and current auto insurance
Comfortable transporting the young women in your vehicle for community activities
Able to pass background check and drug screening
Physically active and able to participate in daily movement and play
Able to maintain a calm and steady presence in the home
After training able to work independently so the primary caregiver can complete administrative work
Compensation
Pay rate $20/hr
Mileage paid at $0.34 per mile for family outings more than 20 miles one way
All cleaning and care supplies provided
Dinner ingredients or takeout meals paid for by the employer
Independent contractor 1099 position responsible for own taxes
One time 75 dollar background and fingerprinting fee deducted from first paycheck
Biweekly pay schedule with flexibility to issue the first check sooner if needed
Training
Several hours of unpaid pre service training are required before working independently. Training includes medication administration procedures, support plans, safety expectations, and daily routines.
