Senior Commercial HVAC & Building Automation Specialist

Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Commercial HVAC & Building Automation Specialist with expertise in Building Automation Systems (BAS) programming and commercial HVAC systems. This role is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and optimizing large-scale HVAC & R (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration) systems in a commercial and healthcare environment. The ideal candidate has a strong background in BAS programming, ensuring efficient system operations and energy management.

Key Responsibilities:

Commercial HVAC & BAS System Expertise – Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair complex commercial HVAC & R systems, integrating and optimizing Building Automation Systems (BAS) for maximum efficiency.

BAS Programming & Optimization – Modify and update BAS controls to enhance system performance, add or remove equipment points, and collect data for analysis.

System Installation & Compliance – Oversee and inspect the installation and repair of HVAC & R and BAS equipment, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes, regulations, and safety standards.

Preventative & Routine Maintenance – Perform scheduled inspections and proactive maintenance to minimize downtime and improve system reliability.

Equipment Troubleshooting & Diagnostics – Utilize technical instruments, manufacturer manuals, and system diagrams to diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration issues.

Project Leadership & Technical Support – Lead specialty projects, collaborate with facility teams, and provide guidance and mentorship to other technicians.

Regulatory Compliance & Documentation – Maintain detailed records, work orders, blueprints, and equipment manuals to ensure operational and regulatory compliance.

Training & Process Improvement – Stay current on HVAC & R industry trends, provide technical training to team members, and recommend system enhancements to improve efficiency and reliability.

Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Trade school or vocational training in HVAC & R, BAS programming, blueprint reading, or related fields preferred.

Experience:

Minimum five years of commercial HVAC experience in healthcare or large-scale facilities.

Strong experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS) programming and system optimization.

Certifications & Licensure:

CFC Certification (required).

Valid Virginia Driver’s License preferred (required for property maintenance roles).

Skills & Abilities:

In-depth knowledge of BAS programming and automated building control systems.

Strong troubleshooting skills for commercial HVAC equipment, chillers, air handlers, and refrigeration systems.

Familiarity with healthcare and commercial building codes and compliance standards.

Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical diagrams.

Proficiency in using computerized work order systems.

Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills.

Additional Requirements:

Emergency Personnel Designation – Must be available to work during emergency weather conditions.

Travel & Flexibility – May be required to travel between facilities and provide own transportation.

Multi-Facility Work – Must be willing to work across different sites based on staffing needs.
