Position Title: Kitchen Assistant/Substitute Cook

Immediate Supervisor: Chef and Director of Operations

Anticipated Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:45-2:30

Anticipated Salary: $16.28-$18.10 DOE

Job Summary: We are looking to hire a hard-working Kitchen Assistant/Substitute Cook to to help us serve high quality USDA credible meals to children ages 6 months-6 years old. Responsibilities include retrieving ingredients from the refrigerator, freezer, and pantry, measuring ingredients as per the chef's instructions, and removing leftovers from children’s plates, bowls, and glasses. Washing dishes is a main function of the job. You should also be able to ensure that all work areas are properly cleaned and sanitized. We also want this person to learn some of the recipes and chef duties so that they can substitute for the chef in their absence.

An outstanding Kitchen Assistant/Substitute Cook should be able to follow all food health and safety regulations and display exceptional organizational skills to ensure the timely completion of kitchen duties.

Job Responsibilities

1. Properly wash and dry all dishes, utensils, cooking instruments and cutting boards.

2. Neatly put away all utensils, cooking instruments, dishes, and cutting boards in their respective places.

3. Remove garbage and recycle, replacing garbage bags, and washing garbage and recycle cans.

4. Mopping and sweeping the kitchen and main eating areas as required.

5. Be familiar with all food prep and health codes for working in the kitchen and serving food.

6. Preparing meal ingredients for the cook, which includes washing, peeling, cutting, and slicing ingredients as assigned.

7. Assisting to unload, inventory and store food supplies.

8. Store ingredients and food items according to food safety standards.

9. Complete laundry duties as assigned.

10. Check temps of refrigerators and freezers.

11. Make espresso.

12. Complete other cleaning duties around the center as assigned and when time allows.

13. Cook when Chef is absent.

14. Occasionally provide short breaks for teachers in the classroom.

Personnel Responsibilities

1. Comply with the following dress code: All staff members are to dress in as professional a manner as possible while maintaining comfort and ease in working with the children. All clothing must be neat, clean and in good condition. A detailed dress code is available in the staff handbook.

2. Display a positive attitude toward the job, the Center, children, and staff. Avoid any conversation that is not supportive of the center, program and/or staff. Your mention of problems, suggestions and grievances are welcomed by administration.

3. Show respect for all fellow staff members, regardless of their roles and for all children and families.

4. Work cooperatively as a member of the staff team.

5. Maintain confidentiality at all times for all people; parents, children and staff.

General Childcare Responsibilities

1. Report to work on time for your shift.

2. Clock in and out regularly on your electronic timecard. Overtime must be authorized in advance and initialed by the Director.

3. Notify the Admin Staff at least two hours in advance if you are going to be absent. Call immediately if you are going to be late.

4. Attend all scheduled staff meetings.

5. Help serve all meals. Be responsible for following all health regulations with regards to serving food. Be responsible for sweeping, wiping down tables and room clean-up in a timely manner after each meal.

6. Follow the same rules as the children. (i.e. no sitting on tables. etc.)

7. Be thoroughly familiar with the emergency procedures established by the Center.

8. Breaks are to be taken in the lounge or outside of the center not in a classroom.

9. Be thoroughly familiar with the Minimum Licensing Requirements for Childcare Centers in regard to job role. (Chapter 338-150 Washington Administrative Code)

10. Smoking is not allowed on The Seedlings campus.

11. Gossip is unprofessional and unacceptable.

12. Keep all teacher items and bleach bottle out of the reach of children.

13. I.D. ANYONE you are not familiar with before releasing a child. Check for proper authorization before release.

Assistant Cook Requirements

1. High school diploma or GED or enrolled in a completion program.

2. Proven experience helping in kitchen settings.

3. A food handler's license.

4. The ability to stand for extended periods of time.

5. The ability to lift at least 50lbs.

6. The ability to climb stairs holding totes of hot food.

7. The ability to safely use kitchen equipment and appliances.

8. Sound knowledge of food safety standards and procedures.

9. Strong communication skills.

10. Excellent organizational skills.

11. Pass a Washington State Portable Background Check through DCYF.

12. MMR Vaccinations or proof of immunity to measles, mumps and rubella.

13. Cleared TB test.
