OverviewAt a time when complex environmental problems are emerging on every front, the Nuclear Sciences Division's staff, capabilities, and facilities are delivering science and technology innovations for the environment, as well as for energy and national security needs. Our diverse work addresses a wide range of national and international challenges, from providing solutions that protect the health of people who must work in hazardous environments, to developing durable new materials, streamlining industrial processes for improved productivity and effectiveness, and delivering new approaches for environmental cleanup. Nuclear Sciences Division capabilities and efforts are focused in three key areas including Environmental Health and Remediation, Nuclear Regulatory, and Nuclear Energy.PNNL is a multi-program laboratory operated by Battelle for the US DOE. The Nuclear Sciences Division within the Energy and Environment Directorate at PNNL is currently seeking a chemical engineer to join its Radiological Materials (RM) group as a Scientist/Engineer 1 (SE1). PNNL’s RM Group is a world leader in development and testing of materials for immobilization of nuclear and hazardous wastes. The successful SE1 candidate will possess an understanding of colloid and interfacial science; dense slurry rheology, transport, and handling; and nuclear waste processing. The candidate will support programs aimed at developing and verifying nuclear waste processing technologies and will join an inter-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and technicians to plan, execute scope, evaluate data, and document/publish results.ResponsibilitiesDesigns, develops, and operates processes or unit operations to create a diverse range of products. Evaluates and manipulates the chemical properties of various substances used in the fabrication of new products. Designs, models evaluates, and implements chemical processes, instrumentation, and equipment to ensure effectiveness in engineering and design. Performs trials, tests, and/or experiments to support engineering, production, and/or R&D activities. Applies the principles of chemistry, nuclear science, biology, physics, material science, math, and engineering to solve problems that involve the production, use or conversion of chemicals, materials, and energy. Uses the principles of biology and the tools of engineering to mimic biological systems to create products or to modify and control biological systems so that they can replace, augment, sustain, or control chemical and mechanical processes.The Chemical Engineer 1 candidate will work with close supervision by senior engineers and scientists. It is expected that within three to five years the candidate will be able to perform experiments and tests with little direct supervision from senior engineers and scientists.The position requires the ability to apply a strong disciplined approach to experimental planning, execution, and reporting. The candidate will be expected to contribute to high quality technical reports and presentations that communicate the objective, experimental process, results, and conclusions in a traceable, defensible manner.General responsibilities include:

Mentoring and overseeing technical work by technicians and interns

Operating small scale treatment platforms

Adhering to strict quality, security, and safety requirements

This position will be expected to work with non-sensitive and sensitive information as appropriate for individual projects and the incumbent should demonstrate an ability to manage sensitive business situations. Key attributes leading to the determination of upward progression in this career family include technical leadership, organizational leadership, project execution, and technical impact.QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

BS/BA or higher

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD in chemical engineering, nuclear engineering, chemistry, or related field; or, Masters in chemical engineering, nuclear engineering, chemistry, or related field plus 3 years of related work or educational experience

Demonstrated experience in a field relevant to nuclear waste processing

Member in a professional society/community

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

Potential exposure to hazardous chemicals; potential exposure to controlled levels of ionizing radiation

Experimental work involves exposure radiological materials and environment and typical laboratory chemicals and equipment that are appropriately assessed and managed to prevent exposing staff to hazards.

Would need to become a Radiological Worker I or II to be able to support radioactive materials testing in radioactive designated areas.
