Coupled with decades of radiological and nuclear materials expertise, advanced computing and threat analysis capabilities, and a broad fundamental science base, we are identifying and countering emerging threats that have significant impact at home and around the globe.ResponsibilitiesPacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking ambitious, high caliber sophomore, junior or senior high school students for intern assignments within the Student Research Apprenticeship Program (SRAP). This summer internship is a research-based experience for students who are sophomores, juniors or seniors and/or students traditionally underrepresented in science and engineering. SRAP is a 10-week program, estimated based on start date; the anticipated start date for summer cohort will be June 18, 2024.The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a multi-program laboratory operated by Battelle for the US DOE. Every year, scores of dynamic, driven people come to PNNL to work with renowned researchers on meaningful science, innovations and outcomes for the U.S. Department of Energy and other sponsors; here is your chance to be one of them!The student will be a member of an inter-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and program managers and will be expected to work collaboratively within this group. This STEM internship position will focus on analysis of experimental data obtained from development and evaluation of new coatings that can prevent accumulation of unwanted biological materials in marine and freshwater energy systems.Responsibilities will include:

Learning data analysis techniques and applying them to well defined assignments in a research and development team

Working in technical teams to complete project tasks on time

Thoroughly documenting analysis, including methods and results

Applicants must be currently enrolled as a sophomore, junior or senior in a public or private high school at time of application

Applicants must be 16 years of age by start date

Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (from beginning of 9th grade to current standing)

Preferred Qualifications:

Basic knowledge of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus

Interest or experience in marine science and data analysis using Python

Experience with basic office software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Good time management

Ability to work independently
