Our School
Bertschi School, founded in 1975, is a Washington State approved elementary school. We are a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS). The school serves children from pre-kindergarten through grade five. Position Summary
LEAP (Learn, Explore and Play) is our afterschool program.
This position works at the direction of the director of extended day and summer programs in accordance with the job description below. This role plans and teaches activities for Pre-K/K students as well as assists with the after school program for all grades. This is a school year
position with potential for extension into summer programming.
Responsibilities:
Plan and lead/assist daily after-school activities for groups of children in 1st-5th grade
Collaborate with director of LEAP and summer programs and teaching faculty to plan programming that best meets students’ needs
Help children develop skills including organization, problem solving, and conflict resolution
Facilitate safe and engaging outside time
Create opportunities for creativity, empathy, and thoughtfulness in play
Support co-workers by attending to individual children who may need specific support
Employ culturally responsive practices that align with the school’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Communicate professionally and effectively with parents, teachers, administrators, and colleagues
Engage in on-going self-assessment and working toward own professional goals
Option to participate and supervise elementary aged students on half-day and full-day in-service days/field trips
Complete duties as assigned by position supervisor or school leadership
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
This position is assigned a Light physical demands strength rating as described by the US Department of Labor, and requires:
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly
Examples include moving student desks and chairs to change the layout of a classroom to influence the learning situation
Walking and standing to a significant degree, and varying positions frequently between standing, sitting, and walking
Seeing and hearing on a continuous basis as well as speaking frequently
Having the manual dexterity to manipulate books and other learning materials, and assist students with various activities
The majority of time will be spent outdoors with students, provided weather conditions support outdoor programming
The work environment will vary from potentially very loud situations such as the gymnasium and playground to more moderate situations such as classrooms
Qualifications:
Two year degree or equivalent
Experience teaching diverse student populations preferred
Interest and experience in working with elementary age children, particularly pre-K and kindergarten students
Ability to work effectively, professionally, and enthusiastically with children, parents, and teachers
